But everyone knows what is coming - even if you aren't a child, you are bombarded with advertisements for that time of year - Back to School. From now, until September 4th, we will be donating funds to various pages set up on Donors Choose, a site where teachers post projects that they would like for their classrooms. The projects featured on the donation page will be ones I have picked out from a random selection of High Poverty schools across the US. Before I provide the donation info, I should share with you some information about Donors Choose: [url=http://www.donorschoose.org/about]About Donors Choose[/url] 1. How do I know this is going to an actual teacher/classroom/whatever? Donors Choose requires teachers to submit proof that they teach where they say they do. They typically contact the princpal of the school or the board of education for the district to verify that the teacher was authorized to post the project. 2. How do I know the teacher won't steal all of these supplies? Well, Donors Choose requires teachers to post an itemized list that is priced out for what they need. When the amount needed is met, Donors Choose will buy the products and send them to the school, not the teacher. 3. What happens if the one I donate to doesn't reach its goal? This happens sometimes. If it doesn't reach its goal, you can do one of three things: Choose a new project to support. Have Donors Choose pick a project for your money to support. Send the teacher you supported a Donors Choose Gift Card in the amount you donated. 4. What kind of schools are we donating to? Good question! Well, I chose six five projects close to random as possible, while looking for areas marked as high poverty. The places chosen (as can be seen below) are (and this list can and will change as projects are fulfilled): PS 94 W Hertel Academy - Buffalo, NY (This project ran out of time and went unfulfilled) Rio Rancho Middle School - Rio Rancho, NM (Fulfilled thanks to a donation from CN) G B Swift Elementary Specialty School - Chicago, IL (Fulfilled thanks to donations from CN) Miami Gardens Elementary School - Miami, FL Ann Street Elementary School - Newark, NJ (This one has been fulfilled thanks to a generous CN donor) Northwoods Elementary School - Jacksonville, NC (This one was fulfilled while I was typing up the post) Rafael Hernandez School - Roxbury, MA D Newlin Fell Elementary School - Philadelphia, PA Terence C Reilly School #7 - Elizabeth, NJ Garfield Elementary School - Yakima, WA Expeditionary School Community Leaders - Brooklyn, NY Eastlawn Elementary School - Rantoul, IL Downey School - Harrisburg, PA Robert T. Hill Middle School - Dallas, TX Ft Chiswell Middle School - Max Meadows, VA Thomas Jefferson-Newcomers - Cleveland, OH (Filled thanks to a generous CN donor) Garden Grove Elementary School - Reseda, CA Brown International Academy - Denver, CO Franklin Elementary School - Provo, UT Bradley Tech & Trade School - Milwaukee, WI James Rhoads Elementary School - Philadelphia, PA 5. You can always make donations to your local schools - just contact the board of education or superintendent's office. They're usually somewhat tax-deductible, too. Good Lady Red I ask you to donate the tech if you feel the desire to send out some to someone recently rogued to help them rebuild. Some how donating for such a good cause for benefit just seems to lessen the meaning I appreciate the offer very much though. When I lived in Dallas, I was next to arguably the best public high school in the state, but if you drove just 5 miles down the road, you arrived in one of the poorest schools, where almost all of the students were on some sort of assistance. The average percentage for America as of 2009 is 44.6%, up from 38.3% in 2000. There are probably numbers more recent than that, but I doubt they've changed much. Poor families have more children and are less likely to send them to private schools, even though most private schools don't actually have better outcomes than their public counterparts. Not to mention that the economy is in the toilet. It doesn't really matter if it's a good school or not, they all need supplies and are under-funded, although obviously some face more challenges than others.
