It is with a heavy heart I write to you to inform your nation and government that Alvonia is under attack. In our rightful and legal attempt to liberate Brandenburg from ultranationalists, the Northlands has taken it upon itself to protect and assist these ultranationalists, citing claims of protecting Brandenburg. Our troops have just now been subjected to artillery and air strikes, and intelligence indicates Northlands ballistic missile capabilities have moved to the Rhineland. I and my staff have already evacuated to an undisclosed location, as Vienna is unsafe and may be subjected to strikes. The situation is clear - Alvonia and the Wehrmacht have come under attack via a foreign power. Although this is not the ideal situation in which I would write to you, I have no choice but to activate our mutual defense pacts.

Director Wilding your request arrived to me late in the day. Babylon will stand with Alvonia in its hour of need. I must advise however, we equally hold an alliance with the Northlands.

 

I have ordered the deployment of significant military forces to the Atlantic to begin immediate operations against the Northlands, but first, I will try and talk them into standing down and preventing further bloodshed and escalating the conflict.

 

Do not think this response tardi or disproportionate, but I must be able to say that Babylon tried diplomacy before resorting to force.

'To whom it may concern,

 

Babylon has been officially requested to step into the conflict due to the mutual defence agreement held with Alvonia. However, Babylon and the Northlands have long held an optional defence agreement as well as excellent and friendly relations since our first meeting was held many years ago.

 

Europe has been riven by war since the world was re-born and we do not want to see this war escalate any further and we do not wish any more lives to be lost. Our involvment would escalate this war and cause more casualties and we are obligated to do so. But I will not lead Babylon into war without first extending the olive branch to try and secure a lasting peace to prevent further conflict between the Northlands and Alvonia.

 

I implore the Northlands to stand down and agree to sit down with Alvonia to negotiate a peace and a resolution to the territorial dispute currently causing this conflict.

 

Do not see this as a threat, this is an attempt to find peace.

Once the Alvonian message was received the Zapadnayan Foreign Ministry rushed into action. The Office of the President would send the following message to Alvonia via secure and private diplomatic channels:

On behalf of the Zapadnayan government I acknowledge receiving your previous message. The situation is quite concerning particularly since the conflict was triggered by Alvonia’s attempt to “liberate” Brandenburg despite the fact that the aforementioned government of Brandenburg remained in place and appeared to be functioning at the time when this purported “liberation” began. In light of this your government is not blameless in this rather complex situation.

 

The request to activate our mutual defense pact places Zapadnaya in a difficult situation. In order to transport Zapadnayan military personnel and equipment to Alvonia, it will require the approval of the Roman Empire, the Kingdom of Sparta and Milan. Further complicating the situation is the fact that Milan is now at war with the Babylonian Empire. We will endeavor to contact these governments in order to obtain the aforementioned approvals. Given the fact that we do not have diplomatic ties with any of these governments, there may be a delay in their responses and there is no guarantee of approval.

 

Additionally, I feel it important to stress that our intervention will be to defend Alvonian territory and to ensure the “survival of Alvonia” as per Article 2 of our treaty. Accordingly, Zapadnayan military personnel deployed under the terms of Article 2 will have this specific mandate only.

The government of Zapadnaya, in order to support the defense of our Alvonian allies, requests permission from the Kingdom of Sparta to move a naval task force through Spartan waters. We are prepared to comply with Spartan government requirements for the military transit of vessels.

Discussions between the Alvonian and Northlandic governments had been ongoing and an end to the current conflict has been agreed upon. Former Brandenburg, excluding a portion of Mecklenburg-Verpommern, is to be under the control of the Northlands, and Alvonian troops are to leave these lands immediately. The remaining part of Mecklenburg-Verpommern, except Rugen island, are under the control of Alvonia and the Northlands will remove its troops from this region.

 

King William IV would address the nation. “Today I announce the cessation of hostilities in the former lands of Brandenburg. Due to the heroic sacrifice of our armed forces, the Brandenburg Germania lands will no longer be threatened or ruled by the hostile Alvonian regime. German lands previously under the control of the Brandenburg state are hereby declared the Free German Protectorate of the Northlands.

 

The Mecklenburg-Verpommern state east of Schwerin will be under the authority of Alvonia. Those wishing to take refuge in the Northlandic protectorate will be met with open arms at the borders. You have not been forgotten.

 

I speak directly to Alvonia and her allies with a stark warning. Any incursion into German lands currently protected by the Northlands will be treated as a direct violation of Northlandic sovereignty. Any violation of the agreement reached today will result in the immediate and complete expulsion of Alvonia from all German states. You have seen our commitment and willingness to stand alongside the peoples of Germany.

 

The Northlands remains dedicated to securing the freedom and prosperity of the Germanic peoples and peace in Western Europe. We remain vigilant in the face of threats to this vision and stand united in its defense. We have spilled blood for these ideals and we honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect a nation of friends, neighbors, and brothers. May God bless their souls and may their memory stand as an enduring symbol of our commitment to peace and freedom.”

Germany

 

At sea, the anti-missile defenses of the fleet would successfully destroy the majority of missiles launched. Most were destroyed in the air through AEGIS and one was shot at close range by the cruiser's CIWS. However, one missile would hit the side of the William IV, causing serious but not catastrophic damage. Fire crews would race to put the fires out, and prevented it from reaching the multitude of missiles carried by the ship. The ships would continue to attempt to lock onto Alvonian ships and would launch a full slew of missiles in retaliation to any launches detected from enemy vessels. Additionally a squadron of F-35s have been dispatched to intercept the incoming bombers, escorting them into Alvonian airspace or launching AMRAAM and Sidewinders if they refused to honor the agreement.

 

Several THAAD defenses and even fewer Patriot systems would be destroyed by Alvonian air power. Ultimately, because the Alvonians chose to remain outside of Brandenburg airspace, casualties would be minimal to Northlands ground forces. Control of the air over Brandenburg and Saxony would allow Northlands prime access to direct bombing of Alvonian forces if needed. For now, the aircraft in the sky would be content to shoot down Alvonian aircraft that strayed into Northlands controlled German air space. 

 

While the Alvonian ground forces were able to limit ground casualties by spreading out, this would prove unfortunate when facing Northlandic men. With the Northlands already having a numerical superiority on this front, the men would advance on positions where the enemy numbers were weakest, covered with support from tanks and the air. 

 

The troops would not reach Alvonian positions until after the announcement of the agreement between Alvonia and the Northlands had been made known to both sides. The advancing troops would not fire first so long as the Alvonian troops began to retreat in accordance with the agreement. However, wary of previous treachery from the enemy, Northlandic forces would not hold and wait and would instead follow the retreating forces to secure all of Brandenburg and Saxony. 

 

The men currently in Mecklenburg-Verpommern would remain in defensive positions until confirmation that the Alvonians were retreating from Brandenburg and Saxony. At this point a reciprocal action would be undertaken and the men would begin moving back to Schwerin, besides 10,000 men who would reinforce Rugen. 

 

A total of 297 men had lost their lives in the initial stage of combat. Additionally, two F-35s were downed, with both pilots safely ejecting from their aircraft. 

 

Baleares

 

In response to the Milan actions, the garrison of 5,000 men in the Baleares would assume combat positions to man the anti-air and anti-sea defenses of the islands. The announcement coming from the Northlandic capital would likely render any combat unnecessary, but the men took no chances. The island was well stocked with Starstreak units and had several Patriot and THAAD emplacements. Artillery emplacements were in place to target the coast locations most suitable for enemy landings by sea. 

 

the RNV Gent corvette and a minelayer have been dispatched to the islands. A squadron of F-35s are also being deployed to the Baleares along with cargo planes transporting additional Patriot missile systems. Additional men and aircraft from the mainland would be mobilized and prepared to reinforce Northlandic positions.

Sparta will deny any such requests as the Alvonia has declared unlawful and hostile intent towards Sparta in its disputes in the Italian Penninsula.  Attempts to aid Alvonia through Spartan territories including the Aegean Waterways, absent preexisting diplomatic agreements will be taken as an act of war against Sparta.

 

 

 

Ambassador Lieonus would be invited to meet with Northlandic officials. Due to the wartime situation, security precautions would be undertaken to ensure the safety and secrecy of the meeting, and would be held in an undisclosed location.

"It appears that we have the opportunity to make common cause and put an end to the bullying of the Alvonians and their Italian allies.  Alvonia's support of Italy has created a situation which is unacceptable of Sparta.  We would propose the formation of a united front with Sparta putting the pressure on Milan in exchange for your political support their an alliance on the future of Europe.  Our specific goals would be the integration of the African and European nations into a common defense community, which has the capability to expel foreign aggression and creating order, rather than the current status quo, which best to our ability involves nations behaving like children yelling, 'Mine.' over territories they have not previously controlled and then playing the victim.  Through our partnership, let us build a Europa that is the envy of the world."

Doge Hereno of Milan welcomes the end to hostilities. "I am happy to say that not a single shot was fired by any Milanese soldier, marine, sailor, or airman, towards any Northlandic target. Peace has been reached in central Europe! I look forward to pursuing mutually-beneficial agreements with the Northlands in the future. In the future, all three of us must remain united in our love for security in central Europe."

"The Northlands would be interested in working together with Sparta towards this goal. We have recently concluded an agreement to resolve the conflict in Germany, with the vast majority of former Brandenburg remaining free of Alvonian imperialism. However should Alvonia break this agreement, or move to assist Milan in their dispute in the Mediterranean, the Northlands could re-engage the Alvonian threat. 

 

We are interested in the prospect of a common defense community in Europe and Africa, and would like more information on the structure you propose. What states do you envision being part of this group?"

Thank you for your reply. The government of Zapadnaya appreciates the situation involving the Milanese government and it’s attempt to claim the entirety of the Italian peninsula. Our request for transit was solely to defend the government of Alvonia from attack by Northlands, under the terms of our treaty with Alvonia, and not to support (directly or otherwise) the Milanese government’s ambitions on the Italian peninsula. Our government does not currently recognize, nor does it intend to recognize, Milanese control of southern Italy on the basis of that government’s ‘successor state’ claim.

 

In light of the situation, we understand the Kingdom of Sparta’s refusal to allow our ships through. As the situation between Alvonia and Northlands has been resolved, we withdraw our request.

Ground War

 

Although several positions were overrun, few troops would fire back once the peace was declared. They would quickly collect the dead and wounded, then retreat back to the border and had now been outlined.

 

Sea War

 

Although most of the Kriegsmarine's missiles had mostly been defeated, the same would be true for Northlands counter-attacks. The Tu-22M planes that had been ordered to counter Northlands naval action were recalled, although they loitered in case Swedish naval power showed up and decided to take offensive action - there had been no word on if Sweden and Alvonia were still at war. Unless told otherwise, the Kriegsmarine was still on war footing, although messages were sent to inform the Northlands navy that no offensive action would be taken against them.

Schleswig-Holstein

 

While operations against Alvonia had been underway in Saxony and Brandenburg, the Northlands had been working alongside Sverige to secure Schleswig-Holstein. Fortunately the state Alvonia had retreated from the region early on in the conflict but the security of the area, especially when the enemy had taken such an interest in Lubeck would be paramount. 

 

As such, 2,000 soldiers would work alongside Sverige forces to defend the state and the Kiel Canal which was crucial for Baltic Sea shipping. Throughout the duration of the conflict the region would be stockpiled with Patriot batteries. 

 

When a workable agreement with Alvonia had been reached, the government of Sverige would be immediately notified of the end of hostilities in the region. King William IV would send his personal thanks to his counterpart in Sverige. With the fall of nations like Italy and Portugal and the inactivity of France, Sverige was one of the few remaining mature, steadfast nations on the continent. Their determination and support would make them an excellent partner for stability in the area and continent as a whole.

 

Free German Protectorate

 

With confirmation of the retreat of Alvonian forces, Northlandic men would quickly assume positions on the agreed upon borders. Soon after the end of hostilities over 100,000 men would be manning the new Northlandic Germany-Alvonia border. Due to the tenuous relationship with Alvonia, orders would be given to build a system of border defenses and fortifications. Alvonia would soon see a gratuitous amount of barbed wire fencing and minefield hazard signs popping up just on the Northlandic side. Checkpoints would be established to monitor and control the flow of traffic between the two regions. 

 

In the span of weeks the border would become one of the most fortified in the world. The security of Germany would not be dependent on hope or trust.
