Somewhere in the Palace of the Republic, Minsk

280px-Belarus-Minsk-Palace_of_Republic-2

It was only a short walk from the KGB Minsk Headquarters to the Palace of the Republic. Despite this, Valery Vakulchic was exhausted when he arrived. He and his staff had been working around the clock thanks to the bombings at the Nationalist Party headquarters, and still had little to show for it. He waited for the security guard to check his identity, and then walked into the grey, hulking, Soviet-era building. A couple of minutes later, he would step into a room. Already within it was the Minister of Defense, Yuri Zhadobin, Major-General Pyotr Tikhonozskiy, Commander of the Army, Marshal Sergei Khudyakov, Head of the Air Force, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Vladimir Andreichenko, and of course, President Lukachenko himself.

Vakulchic took his seat, and and the room looked expectantly at the President. Lukachenko cleared his throat, and shuffled around a few papers.

"It seems," he said, "As though our victory over Alvonia has brought on its own set of problems and challenges." He glanced at the KGB chief.

"Well, Valery, what do you have for us so far?"

"Well, Mr. President, here is what we know so far. The two men who kaunched the attacks were named Waclaw Potocki and Stanislaw Grochowski. They were both members of the Polish Special Forces, which disbanded after the fall of Poland. We believe that they infiltrated Minsk disguised in fake Militsiya uniforms, and managed to enter the Nationalist Party headquarters by claiming to be a part of the security team for the elections. They then planted their explosives, and left the scene. We are still looking for more clues."

Then, surprisingly, Andreichenko said "What interests me the most here, is how these men managed to get as far as they did, despite the billions that we have poured into your agency, Mr. Vakulchic. After all, you yourself stated a couple of months back that the former Polish military had been entirely rounded up and disarmed, with its leaders imprisoned, interrogated, and executed, along with all high ranking Polish government officials. In fact, I believe you stated that it was impossible for terrorists to even enter Minsk. And yet, thee men managed to smuggle a large amount of explosives across our border, unnoticed by all."

Vakulchic glanced at him. Where was the Foreign Minister anyways, he thought to himself. He had been ill for quite some time now.

"With all due respect, Deputy Minister," he spoke, putting stress on the man's rank, "these security operations are not simple things. The men were disguised, we had no way of knowing their real identities. As for their explosives, we are looking into possible sources and such."

The President spoke again, "Well, make sure that you find it. The last thing we need, is, say, an Alvonian agent slipping through our security."

Valery felt a flash of frustration. They were beginning to gang up on him. In an attempt to salvage the situation, he said "This does have some bright sides to it. We no longer have to deal witht he Nationalists, the Alvonians can no longer accuse us of ultranationalism although they will no doubt pull something else out of their asses, and, most importantly, we now have a valid reason, as well as considerable public support, to crack down on Polish independance movements."

Lukachenko nodded, "Indeed. Take care of any remaining affiliates of the former Polish government, especially its military and intelligence agencies. And make sure that every Polish nationalist wakes up in Bereza Kartuska, am I understood?"

"As you wish, Mr. President."

"Good." The President glanced at the Andreichenko. "Any news concerning this event internationally?"

"Not much, Mr. President. The Zapadnayans, the wannabe Bulgarian fellows, announced that their citizens should avoid Belarus, but that's it so far."

"Excellent." He now looked to the military chiefs. "Any news concerning the military on this matter?"

"No sir," responded the Minister of Defense, "The Alvonians are continuing to mine their borders, but who even gives a crap."

The two commanders gave similar responses.

"Very well then. We will meet again in a week, I expect to see some progress by then," he said, looking at Valery.

"Yes sir," he responded, and they all filed out of the room.

Somewhere in the Warsaw, Polish Protectorate

The headquarters of the Polish Independace Party was nothing flashy or special, but then again, it wasn't supposed to be. It was a three story office building, in the western portion of Warsaw. There were no signs as to the Party's presence in the building, so as to avoid the KGB crackdowns that had eliminated so many other Polish Nationalist groups. Officially, the building was the now-abandoned headquarters for the Polish Mining Corporation, a company that, like all the other Polish companies that had survived the Polish government's collapse, had been siezed by the Belarusian government. However, even the clever subterfuges of the Independance Party were no longer enugh to kee the iron fist of Minsk away.

At exactly 1:30, as the Party's leaders were holding an important meeting, the front door of the building would suddenly be slammed open, and some thirty men carrying AK-107 rifles would come running into the building, yelling "KGB! Everyone put your hand on your heads and exit the building immediatly!"

With little choice but to comply, the Party members filed out of the building, where a transport helicopter would take them to the Bereza Kartuska prison for interrogation and, possibly, execution.

The prisons existence is being kept a secret, and has been closed to the public, for the reason of "A lack of structural integrity."

In a continued effort to protect ground assets from air and missile strikes, the military has begun producing decoy ground forces. These are essentially worthless shells made to look like Belarusian ground assets, and can be produced cheaply and in great numbers. Unless the enemy suddenly gained x-ray vision, they would be unable to tell the difference between the decoys and the real equipment. The decoys are also being heavily camoflaged, like regular units, in order to make the deception more believable. Hundred of decoys are already being produced and placed around the Republic.

The Belarusian military has been ordered to DEFCON 4. Military assets have been put under heavy camoflage, and decoys are being shifted around the country to areas in which they will look the most realistic. Air defences have been shifted to a state of heightened alert.

In order to further protect itself against possible EMP attacks, civilian buildings are being proofed against EMP strikes. While it is obviously impossible to re-fit all civilian buildings with EMP protection, a good portion of them will be. Vital power sources and backup generators have already been proofed against such attacks.

Despite numerous budget cuts and delays, the Belarusian Drone Program has managed to construct 150 RQ-1 Predator surveillance drones. These drones have been assigned to the Army, but are not specifically assigned to any particular unit, and can be moved around liberally. Unfortunately, the RQ-1 is unarmed, and is thus limited to a surveillance role. Attempts at creating an armed variant have been abandoned, for now.

The construction of a shelter that can withstand a nuclear blast has been completed. The shelter, which is located in the countryside near Minsk, can house the President, along with high level officials that have been deemed vital to any war effort. The shelter has also been hardened against EMP strikes, and the president would be able to maintain a line of communication to the military.

Vital telecommunications facilities and power plants have also been hardened against EMP strikes. Critical command centers and storage facilities have also been hardened. Medical, food, and water supplies are still being stockpiled outside of major cities, in the case of an NBC strike against Belarus. The military's fuel stockpiles, which are already considerable, are also being increased.

Due to recent tensions in Europe, the Belarusian military has moved to DEFCON 3.

The government has announced a new series of projects to increase the nation's power supply. The plans call for the modernization of existing facilities, as well as the construction of new ones. While Belarus has become energy self-sufficient, thanks to facilities located in the Polish Protectorate, the government has stated that it is necessary that the government increase the nation's supply sooner rather than later. The plan also calls for the exploitation of mineral and gas deposits in Poland, as well as continued drilling for shale oil.

The government has also approved another top-secret research project in to the possibilities of producing weaponized Anthrax. Like all other top-secret research projects, the nature of the project is only known to the Director of the KGB, the President, the Minister of Defense, and the researchers themselves.

While plans for creating Anthrax weapons had long ago been dismissed as too expensive and politically dangerous, recent events had changed the opinion of the government. The bobmings in Shanghai would successfully convince the government of the value to these weapons, and the President would authorize the production of 50 tons of Anthrax, along with the appropriate delivery systems. In other news, Sarin stockpiles have hit 2,000 tons. THe government has decided to cease production, and production facilities will now focus on mantaingin the current stockpile. The government has ordered the commencement of construction on facilities to produce the nerve agent VX. The VX facilities, like the sarin ones, will be built so as to appear as just one more industrial chemical production factory in a nation that produces a huge amount of industrial chemicals. This project has been made possible thanks to research done by the military when it was first building its chemical stockpiles, as well as research done by the USSR during the 1980's. This project, like all WMD projects, is highly classified. The current plan is to build a total of 70 tons of VX.

In other news, the military has authorized the use of 100 of its RQ-1 Predator drones for patrolling the border with Muscovy and the Baltics. Another fifty will be used to keep an eye on things in Poland.
