In the North Rhine-Westphalia region, ground has officially broken on several large scale public works projects, including the construction and retrofitting of rail lines. Local and central government officials have stated this is the "beginning of a series of planned projects to connect the Northlands with our friends in Greece, Alvonia, and Hungary-Slovakia, among others." 

 

The Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate are in the process of reviving the local coal and steel industries in the area. The Northlands is eager to once again revive this industry in the interests of national security as well as diversification of the economy. Representatives from shipbuilders, auto makers, and other related industries across the nation are in talks to assist with the revitalization of steel production.

 

Hamburg has introduced plans to create a citywide subway system to increase the usage of public transportation to get around the metropolis. Bremen, with a lower population, will be constructing a fully above ground light rail system to travel through the province. 

 

The coastal defense forces have begun the construction of a large headquarters in Lower Saxony, along with several small bases throughout its long coastline. One high ranking officials stated that the "security of the North Sea remains a foremost priority for the CDF." The expansion of the German coastline has necessitated the expansion of the CDF fleet to assist with law enforcement and search and rescue operations for the Northlands. The agency is currently deciding what ships and how many to purchase.

 

K. Spain

 

A bustling town is beginning to take shape around the multinational base on the southern tip of the Iberian peninsula. Local officials are incorporating the new locale as Nueva Tarifa in honor of the town now part of the base. Many entrepreneurs and small business owners are eager to provide these soldiers with off-base services. There has been a similar increase of activity by Gibraltar due to the expansion of the naval base.

 

With help from thousands of professional and amateur cooks from Valencia and the surrounding area, a school was able to create the "largest bowl of paella" as noted by recordkeeping officials. Hundreds worked to construct the hundreds of square feet wooden bowl while many more prepared the dish in large batches. To officially commemorate the achievement, the paella was later served to the volunteers and local soup kitchens.

Germany and Spain join the Northlands

 

The Königreich Deutschland has been officially integrated into the greater Northlands nation. The Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg provinces have voted to join K. Germany, making its 17 provinces and over 35 million inhabitants the most populous kingdom of the Northlands. Today has been proclaimed an official state holiday and celebrations are widespread throughout the land.

 

In Bonn, leaders from the K. Germany, provinces, and central Northlands government would meet to mark the day and ensure a smooth transition of the German peoples and lands into the nation. A sizable number of the buildings in Bonn were now used for government work and administration as the city was the seat of government.

 

Officials from Lower Saxony, Hamburg, Bremen, and Schleswig-Holstein met to the note the near completion of a rail line in the northwest extending from Kiel to Hanover to Cologne and Noordenwind. The line will service both passengers and cargo and is a vital link for the new nation. 

 

Military officials met in the Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland to discuss Northlandic involvement in the current French civil war. Noting the Nationalist positions bordering the Northlands, High Command is in talks with the King and other officials over what support, if any, the Northlands should provide to the different factions. There are rumors that the government is preparing to host talks with Republicans.

 

Similar celebrations could be seen and heard throughout the Königreich Spanien, which now includes the Baleares in addition to the autonomous communities of Andalusia, Murcia, and Valencia. Madeira remains a province of the K. Northlands. 

 

The base in Gibraltar-Algeciras, one of the largest in the Northlands, would continue to undergo construction as the region was brought more fully into the Northlands. The large expenditures from the central government would be used to fuel the local regional economy of Andalusia as its industries and markets continued to be more closely integrated.

 

The Parliaments of Murcia and Valencia were both selected through popular election and have begun discussions to pass a wide range of new laws under the rights prescribed to the autonomous communities in their fueros. The Northlands military has begun recruitment in the region to begin training Spanish divisions in the Iberian peninsula for defense.

The volatile Office for Protectorate Affairs (OPA) has been reallocated several thousand bureaucrats to deal with recent world events. The creation of several new bureaus within the office has been authorized to streamline the management of these regions from Noordenwind.

With Greenland secured by the combined Nordic Hammer forces, Northlands troops and administrators would begin the process of returning home. The OPA had swelled in size, and this was seen as an unsustainable allocation of government resources. Many were beginning to criticize the pumping of funds to far flung regions of the globe; assisting regions that had just collapsed was admirable, but not a long-term policy for the nation. The newly reorganized Bureaus within the Office would remain, but several regions would receive a change in their status. 

 

Northlands forces would begin moving out of mainland Tunisia and the Faro District, ending protectorates in these regions. "We have not abandoned them," one OPA official stated, confirming that while there would not be a physical military presence, the Northlands would continue to ensure that these regions were free from foreign influence. 

 

Hesse, Baden-Wurttemberg, Bavaria

 

Euphoria enveloped Germany today as streaming video showed the militarized checkpoints between the former Northlands and Alvonia Germany being taken down. Miles upon miles of minefields are in the process of being cleared to pave the way for relations between the two halves of Germany. Officials from both the Northlands and the Hesse, Baden-Wurttemberg, and Bavaria local governments have confirmed that are in talks to begin the full integration of these regions.

 

Malta, Canary Islands, Azores

 

In the north Atlantic and Mediterranean, the Northlands would officially announce the incorporation of several islands into the nation. The Canary Islands are to become an autonomous community within the K. Spain, while both the Azores and Malta would be part of the K. Northlands. 

 

South Georgia, South Sandwich, Bouvet, Prince Edward Islands

 

Further south in the Atlantic, preparations were made to begin incorporating several islands as integral lands of the Northlands. Due to their remoteness and lack of a population, these islands are to become territories, not provinces. Discussions are underway to determine if they will become part of the already existing South Atlantic Territory (SAT).

Hungarian troops would be greeted warmly and their mission would be unimpeded by the Northlandic actions in the region. Alvonian military installations were all but destroyed when the state collapsed, but the focus here would be on the incorporation of the German peoples and economy into the Northlandic infrastructure. These central European provinces were seen as an integral part of the core Northlands and would receive the largest amount of aid relative to the islands currently being integrated. The economic and military state of Alvonian Germany and Hesse would both be assessed, and Northlands and KfW officials would finalize agreements with local leaders. 

 

Malta, Canary Islands, Azores

 

The Northlands would continue to promote the policies and vision of the Maltese government, sending over military officials and administrators to oversee its incorporation. The military officials would begin assessing the current military bases and defenses of the island while officials would begin to determine how to best tie in the island and its assets to the Northlands trade network. Malta had one of the most powerful economies in the world, particularly for a nation of its size, and this would be of tremendous benefit. It would provide a further crucial trade link in the Mediterranean alongside the Baleares and southern Spain. Officials would also arrive in the Azores and Canaries to determine the status of the military defenses of these islands, many of which contained significant populations.

 

South Georgia, South Sandwich, Bouvet, Prince Edward Islands

 

Life on South Georgia would experience little change as administration was reassigned from the now defunct Economic Security Pact to the Northlands. ESP logos and emblems would be replaced by Northands military signage, and any Greek or Maltese vessels in the vicinity of Grytviken would undergo renovation and reassignment to the Northlands Strategic Reserve Fleet. Similar changes would occur at the smaller facility on the Prince Edward Islands. 

 

A scouting party would be sent to Bouvet Island where there had been much less human activity than the other islands to assess its current state.

Hesse

 

With Bavaria and Baden-Wurttemberg no longer part of the German Protectorate, the Northlands would move to re-fortify the border here with Alvonia. Some of the money meant to stimulate the local infrastructure and economy would be diverted for this purpose. The impact would hope to be minimized due to the construction jobs and materials needed for these fortifications, which would be drawn from the Hesse state. 

 

Malta, Canary Islands, Azores

 

Northlandic investment would put the Canary economy into overdrive as it served to provide a crucial link to trade with Africa and the Americas. It would be used as a hub along with the Azores and Madeira due to its strategic positioning and strong cultural ties with the rest of K. Spain. Local officials on these islands would host talks with representatives from Madeira and the Baleares to help create feasible timelines and policies as these lands integrated more closely into the Northlands.

 

South Georgia, South Sandwich, Bouvet, Prince Edward Islands

 

Officials from the Bureau of Wildlife and Conservation would land on these remote islands to conduct environmental studies and issue findings. Care would be taken to ensure that no non-indigenous species would be introduced. The South Sandwich Islands and Bouvet Island, with their lack of permanent habitation, would be recommended to be designated as wildlife preserves. 

 

Maldives

 

New orders would be received and begin the redeployment of troops in Sri Lanka to the Maldives. The troops would secure the island chain and make preparations for administrators and officials from the Northlands to begin the process of providing aid to the islands and closer military and economic integration with the rest of the Northlands.

With the recent collapse of nations around the world, the Northlands is announcing its intention to annex the following: Spain, Italy, United Kingdom, Ireland, Yugoslavia, Yugoslavia Protectorates, USSR, USSR Protectorates, South Africa, Africa, Texas, Plains Federation, United Caribbean States, and Charlotte, North Carolina. Reports indicate high levels of support from the peoples of these region to be integrated into the re-named Northlandic World Empire.

 

"I've always considered myself a Northlander," stated Argos Argosopolous of Athens, formerly a Yugoslavian protectorate. "I cannot wait to cast my vote to join their wonderful nation."

 

Sergey Sergeynov, of Irkutsk Oblast, agreed. "All hail the Northlands. I've spent years learning about the Northlands and its history and languages, waiting for my chance to join this truly great nation."

 

John Smith, Charlotte, initially spoke less highly of the situation. "I didn't even realize what the Northlands was or where I was or what I was doing until a few hours ago. The more I learn about it though, the more I reconcile the valid and completely appropriate annexation of Charlotte into the Northlands. I've off to buy some clogs."
