Wehrmacht Handbuch für Infanterie, Panzer und Artillerie Operationen

Wehrmacht Handbook for Infantry, Armor, and Artillery Operations

The Wehrmacht is a well-oiled machine, and like any machine it is essential for its operators to know what is expected from them and how to operate such a machine. In this book you will learn all that is necessary to become a soldier, tanker, or artilleryman of the Heer, and how your role fits into the cogs of the Heer and Wehrmacht as a whole. This book is written with the experience and knowledge of two and a half years of Wehrmacht existence, combat, victory, and defeat, in the hopes that the mistakes and lessons learned by those who gave their lives and bodies in serving the Alvonian state will be imparted onto you, our new recruit.

Section 1.17: Auftragstaktik

The doctrine of Auftragstaktik is central and paramount to the Wehrmacht's operating procedure. Under this doctrine, orders are given precisely, but the subordinates are free to carry out those orders however necessary, even if it violates other orders. Commanders give no more orders than are necessary, as every order is a burden on the subordinate. As this doctrine demands immediate reactions and experience in combined arms, it is not unusual to see officers from other branches in service with infantry units, and vice versa.

Section 1.20: On Minefields

Minefields are an essential component of Wehrmacht operations. A well-laid and hidden minefield can take the place of an infantry regiment on the flank, and if covered by two or three machine guns, becomes a no-man's zone that forces the enemy to move elsewhere. Anti-personnel mines and anti-tank mines are to be mixed and placed liberally, ensuring that the enemy both does not know the effects or the location of the minefield until it is too late. Once discovered, machine guns providing cover for the minefields fire upon any enemy that tries to clear the minefield.

Section 2.7: The Sniper

The sniper is an elite soldier, armed only with his Gewehr 91/30, an MP90, his wits, and deadly accuracy, while being subordinate only to the company commander. Heer snipers are trained to observe the enemy, eliminate him with cold efficiency, and be able to escape from nests without being seen. While sniper training normally includes a strong emphasis on "shoot to kill, not wound," Heer snipers are encouraged to shoot the third or fourth man in a patrol line, making sure to hit either the stomach, chest, or spleen to make his inevitable death known to the others in the unit. This has the effect of unnerving the enemy, as the shot is not only coming from what they perceive is behind them, but the screams of their friend will make them feel uneasy. This is conducted during enemy infantry assaults as well - from a well-concealed location the sniper usually waits for the second or third line of enemy infantry to advance before firing, which has the same effects as above. From there, headshots are placed on enemies in the first rows while all others are finished off by regular Heer units.

Section 2.9: The Kavallerie-Panzergrenadier

Kavallerie-Panzergrenadiers are regular Panzergrenadiers, albeit trained to provide screening and light infantry duties for the armored units behind them, often holding the enemy in place so that the heavy units can deal with them. Heer Kavallerie-Panzergrenadiers are armed with everything a normal Panzergrenadier has, with the exception of having to also carry everything necessary for their survival at the front.

Section 3.6: On Armored Tactics

The Panzer Korps is one of the most elite branches of the Heer, and with good reason. The Panzer Korps of the Wehrmacht is trained for the specific purpose of using advantages in both armor and firepower to overwhelm and disrupt a foe, using superior tactics with the sole intent of making it appear as if there are more tanks than actually exist in reality. The Wehrmacht's Panzer Korps is usually much more comfortable on the offense than defense.

Section 5.2: On Rocket Artillery

The Wehrmacht's standard rocket artillery system, the Raketenartilleriepanzer, fires 220mm rockets that can be used in one of two ways - to deny access to an area through incendiary rockets, or to destroy a fortified position with thermobaric rockets.

Classified - Top Secret!

Oberkommando der Wehrmacht Internal Memo

Distributed 8/27/14

DO NOT COPY, DO NOT REDISTRIBUTE

BURN IF FACILITY THREATENED

To all OKW Commanders,

As is well known, the Wehrmacht keeps in reserve strategic rocket forces that contain tabun gas and sarin missile payloads. It should also be well known among the senior command the Wehrmacht's policy concerning such weapons, however this is being redistributed to bring new commanders up to speed.

First, the objective of using tabun gas and sarin missile payloads (hereafter referred to as "special weapons") is not to inflict mass casualties on the military and civilian population of an enemy, although that is a beneficial side effect. The objective of special weapons is to stop an enemy military advance towards a strategic target within Alvonia, such as Vienna, Brno, Prague, Munich, or Stuttgart. Other specifics can be found in attachment A in this document. Special weapons flood their area of impact with deadly or irritant gas, forcing an enemy to stop, collect their dead (if any are present) and outfit their forces with NBC warfare equipment, a process which takes time and will more than benefit the Wehrmacht in preparing defenses and resisting attacks on other fronts.

Second, special weapons are to be used on military targets only. A launch against a civilian target will not be authorized and any officer found to have authorized such an attack will be immediately court-martialed, the minimum punishment of which is imprisonment for 100 years and the maximum punishment is death. Should civilians be affected as part of an attack on a military target, the state will do everything possible to prevent non-military deaths.

Third, the only circumstances under which special weapons will be used is in a situation where not launching them would have disastrous effects upon Alvonia. The Wehrmacht will not preemptively strike with special weapons unless it is absurdly clear that launching said weapons will be more beneficial than not launching them.
