Breaking News in Euphaia (RP)

Euphaia

Recommended Posts

(OOC:  My RP's tend to be insipired by current and past world events.  This one is largely inspired by the current events in Egypt and Syria, as well as by past events in Colombia, Nicauragua, and El Salvador.  I hope you all enjoy my RP and that you feel free to join in.  Also, this was originally posted in my alliance's forum, but thought I'd post it here as well.)

Breaking news today in Euphaia.  After several weeks of a large mass protest by socialists against the capitalist government, the protesters have begun plotting an uprising, after the President of Euphaia gave a speech, refusing to give in to any of the socialists demands.  As the day wore on, and the mass protest begun to turn violent, the President has ordered an indefinate curfew and has ordered Euphaia's military on High Alert, in anticipation of the coming uprising and possible insurgency.

---------------

If recent rumors are to be believed, the recent mass protests and the impending uprising/insurgency have been organized and spurred on by what is believed to be a so far reasonably small, yet growing, Marxist-Leninist faction in Euphaia.  If this is indeed true, this faction would have just surfaced in Euphaia within the last 12 months.  Where these people are recruited from, and how they are being funded, is so far unknown.

-----------------------------

Already, rumors continue to abound and swirl in Euphaia.

There rumors and whisperings amongst supporters of both the left-wingists and the right-wingists.

Rumors amongst the left-wingists is the possibility of starting a revolutionary force or insurgency similiar to ELN, FARC, FSLN (Sandinistas), or the Contras.

Similiar rumors amongst some right-wingists are the hoping for a paramilitary to protect towns, farms, and businesses -- similiar to the AUC or the Northern Alliance -- from any violence from any insurgents, and to help the current government and it's military with any fighting that may break out.

------------------------

We bring you more breaking news as the President of Euphaia is just a moment away from nationally and regionally broadcasting an address regarding the developing situation in his nation.

"My fellow Euphaians, and regional kings, queens, presidents, and ministers in the Atlas region, I stand before you today to address the rising concerns over the situation here in Euphaia.

The following week, there was a week-long mass protest here in Euphaia.  It was initially believed to be just ordinary citizens of Euphaia discontent with the austerity that the regional recession and the weakened Euphaia economy that is a result of the recession.  And, indeed, many of the protesters are and were ordinary citizens.

But my government has reason to believe that the main leaders and organizers of the mass protest are a communist extremist fringe group, who want nothing more than cause discontent, unrest, and even violence, terrorism, strife, and civil war in order to achieve their goals of toppling legitimate governments, and spread and exporting unrest, violence, terrorism, and communism to other nations in the region.

They will deny this and lie through their teeth in order to recruit others to their cause and to gain financial and military aid.

That is why I stand here before you today to declare that our government STANDS UNITED in our determination to do whatever necessary to rid our nation, and the Atlas region, of these communist rebels and terrorists.  It is my hope that you, my fellow regional nations and powers, will stand with us, behind us, and beside us, in our effort to restore peace and order in our nation, before this unrest ans civil strife is able to spread to other bordering nations.

Thank you."

*The President of Euphaia regrets not being able to meet the leader of Legion person, under the current pressing circumstances, but sends his cordial regards to the nation and people of Legion, and to the legitamely elected leader of Legion.  He hopes this will be the beginning of warm diplomatic relations between Euphaia and Legion.

---------------------------

*The leader of the newly-forming Euphaian Resistance, who wishes to remain in secrecy at this time, none the less cautiously sends his regards and best wishes to Legion, it's leader, and it's peoples.  The Euphaian Resistance offers it's formal recognition of the nation of Legion and it's leader, and cautiously offers diplomatic relations.

(You forgot to mention which one you are inviting back.  The President (who sent an ambassador) or the Resistance (who's leader sent along a messenger, who in turn met you (or one of your government representatives) in secret. (The Resistance, especially it's leadership, have military arrest orders on their heads, so are ofcourse are reluctant to be seen in public).

*as early evening rolls around, once again fairly large crowds gather outside the Presidential Mansion, Ministerial buildings, and the Legislative buidling.  The angry crowds begin angry chants and waving either their fist or a sign in the air.  Police and Military Guards are both on hand to monitor the situation and to prevent any violence, destruction, or vandalism.

As the evening and night continues, the crowds continue to grow, and become angrier and louder.  Before long, more police and military guards are called to help monitor the crowds and protect the buildings.*

(Official diplomatic visits to Ontario.)

*You receive two visits at two different times today. One from an ambassador of the Euphaian government. The second is 'a representative from the true voice and will of the people of Euphaia.'

They both offer Ontario congratulations, officially recognize Ontario as independant and legitimate nation, and offer their friendship and formal diplomatic relations to Ontario. The informal representative especially expressed his sincere and heartfelt congratulation to the nation and the people of Ontario on their newfound freedom and independence, proclaiming Ontario as a beacon of hope to the people of Euphaia, who consider themselves comrades in spirit with the peoples of Ontario.*

*After the very large protests a few days ago, President Jarris today has called an emergency session of the Legislature. Though approximately a third of the legislature regularly expresses oppossition to the President's policies, the other two thirds of it usually easily agrees with the President's requests and policies, somewhere between 90 to 95 percent of the time, and has been accused of regularly being a rubber stamp for the President.

Today the President has requested four new, supposedly temporary, laws, to take effect immediately, for 12 to 18 months. He has proposed laws against more than 20 people gathering for more than 15 minutes, excluding hospitals, restaurants, theaters, schools, universities, stores, churches, taverns, and the Legislature; banning outdoor activities that last more than 15 minutes after 6 pm; and banning the encouragement or incitement of acts of unrest, violence, or sedition, with violators subject to immediate civil or military arrest, and banning the selling of, possession of, and usage of guns, ammunition, and explosive devices to civilians outside of the military and police force, also resulting in a civilian or military arrest if violated.

A third of the opposition has expressed complete outrage at these proposals, calling them an affront and travesty of freedom and human rights, and threatening to resign should the proposals be passed.*

  • 2 months later...

*three PMO (Private Military Organization) soldiers are standing guard at the National Congress building in the capital, down from the 10 army soldiers that once stood guard just a month ago, before the new laws that were passed made things fairly uneventful.*

Corporal Reid: Man, what an easy paycheck this is.  I knew joining the PMO would be a good choice as soon as I heard about the new laws that were being proposed a few months ago.  The President's proposals always get rubber stamped by the Congress.  *chuckles*

Corporal Samson:  Yeah, tell me about it.  Just stand here for 5 hours, get relieved for the day by the next shift after that.  Occassionaly chase off a few people with some actual guts.  Get a decent paycheck every two weeks.

Sergeant Richards:  Don't look now, but here comes one of those groups now.  *shouts toward the approaching group*  Move along! Move along!

*Corporal Reid squints at the group, and then looks through his binoculuars towards them*

Corporal Reid:  I don't believe it.  This is no small group.  There's at least 100 in that group.

Sergeant Richards:  Get the tear gas and rubber bullets ready then, men.

*The large group reaches the Congressional building and begins to chant angrily.*

Protest Group:  Prosperity Now! Prosperity Now!  Equal Prosperity for Everyone!

Sergeant Richards:  Listen up! This is government property. If you all aren't out of here in 60 seconds, we have the authority to place you all under military arrest.  Am I understood?

*The protest group ignores Sergeant Richards, only chanting in an even angrier tone.*

Sergeant Richards:  Alright then.  Fire crowd dispersal rounds when ready, men.

*The three PMOs each fire a round into the crowd.  The crowd stays put, still chanting and shouting.*

Sergeant Richards:  Tear gas, tasers, and batons ready, men.

*The three PMOs advance towards the crowd and manager to subdue three of the protestors.  This outrages the protest group, who take out rocks and begin hurling them at the PMOs.*

Corporal Reid:  Aw crap, there's too many of them and too many rocks.

Sergeant Richards: It's just rocks.  We have riot shields.

*The three PMOs retreat to where they keep their riot shields and get behind them.  After another few minutes, a few people hidden in the crowd begin to open fire towards the PMOs, in addition to the continual lobs of rocks that fly towards the PMOs.*

Sergeant Richards:  Damn it, there's not enough of us to handle this situation.  I thought most guns have been confiscated from the public already.  *Sergeant Richards takes out his walkie talkie and reports the situation on the radio channel reserved for the police, army, and PMO to use.*

Sergeant Richards:  Alright, help is on the way, but it'll be another ten minutes before it arrives.  Just stay behind the riot shields for now.

*Another round is fired by the people with guns that are hidden in the crowd, but the shields manage to protect the PMOs from the bullets.  Suddenly, a live grenade is hurled towards them.*

Sergeant Richards:  Look out, men! Grenade!

*The PMOs dive for cover just before the grenade explodes.  Two of the PMOs escaped harm, but Corporal Samson has one of his legs hurt badly by the explosion.*

Corporal Samson:  I'm down, I'm down!

Sergeant Richards:  Reid, grab Samson, and retreat into the Congressional Building!

*The three PMOs get up and retreat inside the Congressional Building, locking and barring the doors behind them.*

*As news of the protest group that made the PMO guards retreat spreads, the number of people joining in protests in the capital grow from 100 to several thousand, each group armed with rocks, about a third of the groups have hidden gunmen in them, and a fourth of the groups having one or two grenadiers in them.  By early evening, the PMO sound finds itself nearly fully deployed in response to the growing and violent protests, and is radoing the Euphaian military asking for assistance.

By late evening, twelve PMO contractors have either been badly injured or killed.*

Recent visits to Sudan/Uberstein:

*An ambassador from the capitalist government of Euphaia greets you.*

Ambassador: Euphaia is pleased to see that it's friends in Sudan has finally reached independance and sovereignty, and will gladly offer what diplomatic, economic and humanitarian help it is able to, to this great fledgling, and--hopefully in the future, allied--nation.  We'll do whatever we can to assist you in becoming a prosperous--and, hopefully, capitalist--nation.

---------------------------------

*Later in the day, you are approached by a man who only identifies himself as "a friend and comrade of the people of Sudan".

Man:  The people of Euphaia are glad to hear of your success in becoming independant.  We, too, soon hope for our own change in government, and to spread freedom and wealth amongst all the people in Euphaia, instead of all the weatth being hoarded by the wealthy and the elite.  We in Euphaia hope our brothers and comrades in Sudan share the same goals and aspirations as we do.

*President Jarris is sitting behind his Presidential Desk in the Presidential Office.  He seems stressed after the mass violent protests that took place today.  Suddenly, one of his advisors enters the office.*

President Jarris:  Do you have the figures on just how many so-called freedom fighters there are, yet?

Advisor:  Estimates from the military and PMO are 300 to 400 armed freedom fighters.  They also estimate that they have the support of around 20 to 25 percent of the Euphaian population.

President:  Damn.  They are growing, and somehow managed to get a supply of guns and ammunition despite our best efforts.  Now they have a good chunk of support too.  *sighs heavily*

Advisor:  The Private Military Organization says they have 85 to 90 percent of their soldiers currently deployed, and a casualty rate of 12 soldiers badly injured or killed by bullets and explosive blasts.  They are requesting military assistance, sir.

President:  Fine, fine.  Send a detachment of 300 armed military soldiers to assist, and give the military and the PMO soldiers whatever weapons and ammunition they need to defend themselves.

Advisor: Yes, sir.

(The next day)

Advisor:  President, the military and PMO have received the shipments of sting grenades, stun grenades, and tear gas grenades you ordered for them.

President:  Excellent.  Inform them they may use them in their operations effective immediately.

Advisor: Yes, sir.

*Also the next day, an AFF soldier reports to the mysterious leader of the AFF.*

Soldier:  Sir, I've got good news.  While we were not able to secure any more guns or grenades, we were able to liberate some more ammunition from a military truck that got too close to one of our protests today.  Three supply crates full of semi-auto and automatic bullets.

Leader: Excellent, that is indeed good news, thank you!  Reward those responsible with extra rations and my thanks and conngratulations.

Soldier: *salutes* Right away, sir.

The Euphaian government welcomes the Melhua'an Minister, and is pleased to grant the Melhua'an government an embassy in the Euphaian capital, and offers to post some Euphaian military guards outside the embassy's gates during the period of unrest that Euphaia is experiencing.

A Euphaian diplomat will be sent to Melhua'a shortly as well.

*The mysterious AFF leader is looking over the latest intelligence reports with his top advisors.*

Leader:  It is clear that our current supplies with last us at most two months.  Our best chance at growing and keeping the pressure on the Euphaian government is to launch assaults at their supply chain.  Their main armory will be too well guarded for us to be successful without taking moderate casualties.  Our best chance is to attack military supply trucks, jeeps, perhaps also armored trucks and APCs, as well as finding and assaulting caches that are stored in different scattered warehouses and smaller installations.

Do not seriously damage or destroy any jeeps or APCs you come across, only incapacitate it's occupants.  We need what vehicles we can get.

We can further increase our chance of success by instigating more large protests, and perhaps some riots, that will distract and keep the military and PMO occupied.

Any questions?

Advisor:  No, not at this time, sir.  We can take care of it.

Leader:  Good...good.  Here is a list of what we need.

*The mysterious rebel leader hands his advisor a list that reads "Grenades: Fragmentation, Concussion, Incendiary, Sting.  Rifles: Semi-auto and Automatic; Military Grade.  Ammunition: For Semi-Auto and Automatic.  Binoculuars.  Food.  Medical supplies.  Riot shields.  Bullet-proof vests.  Jeeps.  APCs.  Military Trucks. Tires. Oil & Fuel.  Currency.  Dynamite. C4.  Explosive charges.  Bazookas and Ammo.  Rocket Launchers & Rockets.  RPG Launchers & Ammo.

Not Necessary But Useful If You Can Find:  Gold, Silver, Diamonds, Sand, Sand Bags, Concrete, Iron Drums & Barrels, Metal & Concrete Blockades/Barriers/Barricades."

*The advisor looks over it and gives a nod.*

Advisor:  We will take care of it, sir. No worries.

Leader: Good.  You are dismissed, then.

In this evening's news, violence once again rocked the Euphaian capital, as well as a few other Euphaian cities, as the communist insurgency group known as the AFF, launched assaults on several dozen warehouses and small installations, as well as set up roadblocks and ambushes on any trucks, both civilian and military, that crossed the insurgents paths.  While it appears there were no civilian casualties, small pockets of fighting where the military and PMO attempted to chase off the groups of insurgents, have claimed five more casualties to the government-led forces, and three casualties to the insurgent-led forces.

A Euphanian government spokesman has earlier today said that while material loses were minimal, that several military jeeps and trucks, as well as a minimal amount of fuel, military rifles, and ammunition were captured by insurgents.

In tonight's news, an estimated 10,000 Euphaians took to the streets in various cities in Euphaia, with some of the protests again erupting in gunfire and grenade blasts.

The massive protests stretched the Euphaian military thin, allowing the AFF forces to continue and intensify it's raids on warehouses and small installations, as well as on military and civilian trucks.

The Euphaian government has issued a statement that says that casualties and equipment loss were again minimal, and that the Euphaian government is looking into measures to increase it's military and to double the amount of guards posted at military warehouses and installations.

More breaking news tonight in Euphaia.  There are reports that just moments ago, while the massive protests across Euphaia--especially in it's capital--have continued, the insurgent group AFF have managed to take control of one of Euphaia's high-powered radio stations.  This radio station is capable of being heard throughout Euphaia, and can even be heard in towns close to Euphaia's borders in some of Euphaia's neighboring countries.

The military is currently stretched thin with the massive protests, and so has not yet been able to muster a large enough group of soldiers to retake the radio station.

----------------------------------------------

*Currently being broadcast from the radio station*

Our brothers and comrades around Euphaia.   Brothers and comrades from the countries that surround us.  The time has finally come.  The communist revolution is alive and well in Euphaia.  The time is now at hand to come join.  Together we can overthrow this corrupt and elitist government.  The greedy so called capitalist swine, that hoard all of Euphaia's land and wealth for themselves.  We cannot and will not stop until this unjustice is rectified, and the land and wealth of Euphaia has been distributed to those most deserving of it.

Together we can put an end to all the injustices...once and for all!

*The mysterious rebel leader and his lieutenants are in an undisclosed, up-until-now-abandoned warehouse, taking stock of the new recruits their radio broadcasting has brought in.*

Rebel Lieutenant:  Sir, I'm counting two hundred new bodies, about 40 of them appear to be foreign.

Leader:  Wonderful!  That brings us to 590 soldiers then!  Continue the radio broadcasting, we'll soon have enough men to put real pressure on the Euphaian government.

Also, we will need to step up our raids on military trucks and military warehouses, so that we can arm our new soldiers.

Lieutenant:  Aye, sir.  It will be done.

*Radio Broadcast from Captured Euphaian Station*

Hello again, my brothers and comrades in Euphaia!  Yesterday, we had a glorious protest of 10,000 citizens all around Euphaia.  Join our noble cause once again today, and help us double or even triple yesterdays outcome.  Show the Euphaian government that you stand united with us and united against it's injustices.  Show the Euphaian government that it is time to share Euphaian's land and prosperity with all of it's people!

Viva la Revolution!

In today's news, by mid-afternoon today, an estimated 30,000 protesters had gathered throughout Euphaia, putting even more pressure on the government and further stretching the Euphaian military and police force.  Luckily, the only violence reported so far today has been stone throwing, and no casualties have been reported so far.

The large protests have kept the vast majority of the military, police force, and PMO soldiers occupied, allowing the AFF to erect even more roadblocks and to conduct even more warehouse and small installation raids.

Meanwhile, the AFF has continued it's broadcasts from the radio station it commandeered two days ago.

*The mysterious rebel leader is meeting with one of his top advisors in the rebels' undisclosed abandoned warehouse.*

Advisor:  Sir, after talking with some of the other military advisors, we have come to agreement that with the increase in number of both protests and freedom fighters, and with the military and PMO being stretched fairly thin and being preoccupied, that it is now feasible to launch a few assaults on some of the...how shall I say...more medium-sized...warehouses that our reconaisance has managed to locate.  With your word, sir, shall we commence with these assaults?

Leader:  Yes, go ahead with them, but keep it to no more than three larger warehouses for now.  We still want to minimize losses wherever possible.

Advisor:  Ofcourse, sir.  As you wish.
