People and Politics: Examining Sierra Leone's Political Situation

In this week's episode of People and Politics, we examine the Capitalist's League of Sierra Leone, the party that currently controls the position of President. While referring to the office as "Interim President," Michelle Dalton, leader of the Capitalists League of Sierra Leone, has stated that their main goals are to turn Sierra Leone into a "true capitalist's paradise", meaning low government intervention and a very free market. While it has many different views on the political spectrum, the party is small, with only 450,000 total estimated supporters. Despite this incredibly low number, the Capitalist's League is incredibly influential in Sierra Leone's politics. This is likely due to the fact that most higher Party officials have positions as chairmen and even more have stocks in many of Sierra Leone's industrial and commercial companies. With those goals in mind, other parties, specifically the Communist Party of Sierra Leone and the Tianxian Party, have opposed the Capitalist's League with every step. No doubt the Capitalists will be campaigning hard in the coming months to keep their hold on the Presidency.

People and Politics: Examining Sierra Leone's Political Situation

In this week's episode of People and Politics, we take a look at the Tianxian Party of Sierra Leone. Current leader, 60-year old Eniola McGreggor, has publicly and privately stated his wishes to see Sierra Leone become loyal to the Tianxian Emperor, a stance that has caused alarm among the African Party and Militarists Party. While the Tianxian Party has no specific government policy changes in mind, McGreggor has stated his party is open to any ideas set forward by party members. Currently, the Tianxian Party does not hold a majority in the House of Representatives, taking up only twenty of 300 seats. Lower-level party members, who wish to remain anonymous, claim election fraud as the cause of these low seat numbers. This claim has been rebuked by the nascent Independent Voting Committee of Sierra Leone, who oversees the entire election process from first vote to final vote counting. Despite this, higher party members state they will do everything in their power to bring more votes to their party and gain "equal representation" in the House.

People and Politics: Examining Sierra Leone's Political Situation

In this week's episode of People and Politics, the Communist Party of Sierra Leone will be discussed. One of the larger parties in Sierra Leone, right after the Christian Alliance, the Communist Party runs under a wide spectrum of Communist ideals, from Leninism to Rational Communism. Goals set forward by party leaders include nationalization of many private industries and companies, diminishing the income gap between what they call the "proletariat" and the "One Percenters," and an increased focus on eliminating social issues within Sierra Leone. Criticized by the African and Militarists Parties for seeking nothing more than a Stalinist "failure of a state" with mass executions, gulags and restricted democratic freedom, the CPSL has consistently presented itself as a friend to the people of Sierra Leone. Despite the somewhat uphill battle to claim the hearts and minds of the people, Communist Party leader Daniel Blackwood has stated he expects high results in the elections, upcoming in four months.

People and Politics: Examining Sierra Leone's Political Situation

In this week's episode of People and Politics, we take a look at the African Party. Led by Samuel Amadi Brown, a notable militia commander in one of many of Sierra Leone's militias. While technically illegal under the Constitution, most parties have acknowledged at the very minimum the existence of militias loyal to them, and it seems that the current administration will not do anything to force these elements to dissolve. The African Party runs on a platform of making Sierra Leone stronger, both economically and militarily, and forcing all foreign influence out of Africa. This brings obvious protests from the Tianxian Party and Educated People's Union, both of whom argue that foreign influence helps Sierra Leone. Samuel Amadi Brown responded to these statements by saying "For generations, foreigners have been in Africa. From the early days of colonialism to more recent examples such as the British-Ottoman/Republique War and the AUP war versus Terre Regius, which brought foreigners from apparently every corner of the globe." Brown went on to say, "Athens now controls a majority of North Africa and even more of her soldiers are in so-called "protectorates" spanning all corners of our continent. How can this help us?" This, as well as more radical statements, have led to low support for the African Party. Only a few thousand Sierra Leoneans identified themselves as "African Party" members when polled, and 31% of those stated they have considered leaving the party. Brown said that he expects a reversal of this once people, as he said, "see the treachery that lies in the Capitalist's League and in foreigners on our soil."

People and Politics: Examining Sierra Leone's Political Situation

On this week's episode of People and Politics, the controversial Militarists Party is discussed. Led by Tyler Walker, the foremost goal at the party's mind is the expansion and modernization of Sierra Leone's military in all corps and branches. Party leadership has criticized the Capitalist's League, Christian Alliance, Tianxian Party and Educated People's Union for their opposition or denouncement in expanding the armed forces. Tyler Walker, unlike most party leaders, has openly acknowledged that he and his party members are in control of numerous militias present in Sierra Leone, and it is not uncommon for him and many of his aides to be seen inspecting or otherwise drilling their militiamen. Many of the party members, and official party leadership, lean toward autocracy, bordering on fascism. While few actually acknowledge being fascists for fear of international consequences, there is a general trend among newer members to follow the party line or be excluded. This is reflected in a growth of autocratic views among military members, which brings criticism from the Educated People's Union. Despite these protests, the Militarists Party continues to recruit primarily from the military ranks.

People and Politics: Examining Sierra Leone's Political Situation

In this week's episode of People and Politics, we examine the Educated People's Union. Composed of primarily liberals, scientists and other such professionals, the Educated People's Union has no goals of government change but many goals of improving or expanding Sierra Leone's education system. With those goals in mind, though, party leader Mickey Desole has stated his party is against authoritarianism in any form, criticizing the Tianxian Party, Militarists Party and African Party for supporting such views. While a small party itself, it appears many Sierra Leoneans recognize the value of a good education, and as such the EPU has one of the larger percent of seats in the House of Representatives. Whether this will stay with other parties, such as the Tianxian and African Parties, increasing their campaign size and attempting to gain even more seats remains to be seen.

People and Politics: Examining Sierra Leone's Political Situation

On the season finale of People and Politics, the Christian Alliance is discussed. Led by prominent Sierra Leonean pastor Olufemi Desoto, the Christian Alliance is a, unsurprisingly, Christian-centric political party whose goals involve an intertwining of government and God. Opposed mainly to contraception, gay marriage, alcohol and other such vices, the Christian Alliance strives for purity in Sierra Leonean society and a Godly nation. This brings criticism from both the Communist Party and African Party, both of whom state that religion has no place in the government. Despite this, the Christian Alliance is the largest party in Sierra Leone with over 200,000 registered party members. This can be attributed to the large numbers of Christians in Sierra Leone, and while not all are of the same denomination the Christian Alliance does not seem to favor one over the other. The Christian Alliance is expected to have a majority of votes in the upcoming election for House seats and the position of President.

President Basher's already bad day was getting worse with each passing minute. The military was demanding more money to procure weapons systems and vehicles, the Communists in the House were pushing for a more aggressive diplomatic corps, and of course both they and the EPU were demanding comprehensive healthcare and education systems. Not that Gregory was opposed to healthcare and education, but their plans for healthcare included contraceptives - something the majority Christian Alliance simply could not accept. But now, now he was being asked to support a bill to ban travel to Prussia, Denmark and Poland because of the war in Europe, and to veto an upcoming bill that would allow the monitoring of cell phone calls, the latest in a string of surveillance measures put forward by the Militarists Party. While surveillance on the people wasn't exactly high on Gregory's list, what was was the elimination of the various and numerous militias that roamed Sierra Leone's jungles and hills. Both the African and Militarists parties had several militias under their command, which threatened to overthrow the government at any time. And God forbid if the African Party managed to get a large enough majority to take control of the House.

///Private///

While the president debated with himself on what his newly-formed nation was coming to, a plot was stirring in the jungles of Sierra Leone. "One enemy down, but a new one poses a threat to us," Samuel Brown said as he exhaled cigarette smoke. A map of Freetown was on the table, illuminated by a work light jerry-rigged to the roof of the rundown shack. "The Army will be on your side if and when this happens." This new voice was Major-General Marcus Lockheart, leaning over the map, almost as if he was trying to gain new perspective. "Then when the election results come in, either we take the House by electoral vote...or by force." Major-General Lockheart stood tall and looked at the militia leaders surrounding Samuel. "I hope all of your men will be ready when the time comes. The last thing I want is weakness in our ranks." Samuel snuffed out his cigarette and looked directly at Lockheart. "We will be ready, Major-General."

Late in the afternoon, President Gregory Basher and Vice President Jamie Walker were both given a briefing on the possible hostile uprising of African Party militias. "So, they plan to take up arms, hmm?" Walker noted as he read over the report. "It would appear so, Mr. Walker," Basher added, clutching his cross necklace in his hand. "What can we do?" Both men looked to General of the Army Simon Fullcaster, who stiffened up. "Well, there is always the option that we deploy the military to eradicate these militia groups, but we risk angering the population and African Party."

"I do not relish the idea of murdering brothers and husbands because they affiliate with a certain group, General," Basher said, staring the general down. "Mr. President, with all due respect, that is only one option. I understand and respect your religious beliefs, but doing nothing may lead to undesired consequences." Further driving home his point, he added, "Consequences that will result in our destruction." Several minutes passed as Basher looked down, with both Walker and the various political and military advisers looking to him for guidance. Finally, Gregory lifted his head back up.

"Constant patrols around Freetown. Do whatever is possible to get the military the vehicles they need."

Arguing from the House of Representatives is now common as Afro-Russo Communist Front and Africa First League politicians debate the various acts, measures, reforms, and new drafts of the Constitution for Sierra Leone. Nonpartisians on both sides and in other camps call for the need for a united government and a plan of action, but these fall on deaf ears as the two blocs push their separate agendas and ideals forward. The more hotly debated issue facing the House of Representatives for the past month has been changing the Constitution to ban all fascists and fascist parties from running for political office, House of Representatives, or military service. A clause in this article also states that any citizen or military member who identifies as a Fascist would be immediately arrested and tried for treason, a crime that is punishable by death. The Africa First League vehemently opposes this measure, claiming that it needlessly targets the citizens of Sierra Leone and would encourage a "witch-hunt." Africa First leader Oscar Werben said in yesterday's session that he believes this clause is intended "not only to shame our brave Military Front brothers, but also to further the goals of the Communists and eliminate those who the so-called Afro-Russo Front see as enemies." Communist leader Jamie Walker has denied this claim, saying it has "no basis in reality and is absolutely ridiculous." Maximilian Ionaster added his voice to the debate, saying that "the Afro-Russo Communist Front has no enemies that must be "eliminated" by any means, and we must wonder where the Silver Legion gets these ideas from."

Following recent proposals in the UN Security Council, a proposal of their own was made in the House of Representatives, a revival of one of the first few House resolutions prior to the Fascist rebellion. The Militia Disbandment Act is an almost word-for-word rehash of the original proposal from a year ago, although this act is being argued for heavily by the Afro-Russo Communist Front. On the other side of this debate though sits the Africa First Legion, who call the act a "gross violation of our rights as Sierra Leoneans and an invasion of sovereignty by the European and Asian reactionaries."

Currently, the Militia Disbandment Act is being voted on, although political experts in the media have a dim outlook on the success of the act.

The House of Representatives has been divided on the issue of the Militia Disbandment Act. Africa First Legion politician Benjamin Stoner said in his speech today that "not only is this act a violation of the rights this country was set upon, it also destroys an ancient right given to the people. We must have these militias in place to check and balance our government!" Stoner also said that he believed the Afro-Russo Communist Front leader, Maximillian Ionaster, was directly responsible for the death of former President Gregory Basher, but when asked for proof simply said it would become apparent in the coming days.

Anonymous sources from the House of Representatives state that the votes are currently at 42 "aye" and 43 "nay".

In a speech made today, Afro-Russo Communist Front leader Jamie Abidemi Walker denounced the idea of militias. "The goal of the Africa First Legion to continue keeping these militias operating is disturbing to us in the Communist Party. Partisan militias are what brought Legion to bomb us in the first place, it is what led to Brown's Fascists and the terrible war that followed. These militias are what brought the death of President Basher! If I did not know better, I would say that the Africa First Legion wanted this bill to fail just so they could continue meddling about in the lives of citizens. I say no more. The only entity the people of Sierra Leone should trust to keep them safe from our enemies, both foreign and domestic, is the Sierra Leonean Army, not some militia run by a washed-out warlord."

Anonymous sources inside the House of Representatives state the votes now sit at 91 for, 110 against.
