Government Introduces the Mark to Liberated Territories

BERLIN - Prussia's central bank issued new currency to the liberated southern territories on a one-to-one exchange. The central bank will allow a 60 day grace period for exchange before the old Austrian currency is no longer considered legal tender. Effective immediately, all government employed personnel will receive payments in the Prussian Mark. Stiff penalties will be enforced for businesses that fail to issue the new currency in a timely manner, including banks and operators of automated teller machines.

The Prussian stock market will move to Frankfurt-am-Main from its current location in Königsberg. The Frankfurt facilities are significantly larger and better equipped to deal with the nation's financial markets. In addition, Frankfurt's location helps Prussian businesses make further inroads into the Low [Countries] Territories of the Athenian Federation, as well as the neighboring French speaking regions. While trade in the east remains a priority, the government could not ignore the fact that the bulk of trade enters western ports of entry, up to and including, actual sea ports in Bremen and Hamburg - specifically shipping come to and from the American Commonwealth.

The government continued to strengthen the Bundeswehr presence in southern Prussia as it continued to rotate troops into and out of the south. Increased drone activity would complement traditional man powered aircraft over the skies to assist in border security efforts. Former Austrian-German bases and equipment would be audited and then confiscated into the Prussian armed forces. Bases would see a host of new Prussian personnel within the coming weeks - border defense areas, especially close to the border would be reinforced with additional assets. Ongoing training and monitoring along the border by Prussian border security agents would continue with the slow integration of natives.

The Prussian government would begin easing border restrictions along the Austrian border following no apparent further aggressive movies by the new Viennese government. Prussian border guards would be exempted from the easing as their increased numbers were deemed necessary by Berlin for national security. Continued coordination and updates would be made in the allied headquarters in Strasbourg, but the Prussian representatives would advise no further allied action would be necessary at this time. With no further threat from the southeast, the Prussian navy would return to its Atlantic security patrols.

War in Europe

BERLIN - War has returned to the European continent with a surprise Danish attack against the United Kingdom. The Danes are seeking to liberate the Celtic people who form a large percentage of the United Kingdom's population. The Danes appear to have evidence of English aggression against the Celts, though the world has yet to see such reports released by Copenhagen. London seems to claim that such statements are purely propaganda. Should the conflict grow wider, there is a risk that Prussian will need to intervene as it is a treaty partner of the Nordborne Kingdom. Sources inside the military confirm that there have been no requests for aid via the Strasbourg Command Center from Copenhagen.

Chancellor Müller has sent an offer to the English and Danish governments offering to mediate a peace summit in Munich. Peace in Europe remains an issue that both Prussia and the Athenian Federation have long championed. It is hoped that with Prussian mediation a swift and mutually beneficial solution can be found diplomatically to avoid further loss of life and instability for Europe.

Classified:

Although officially neutral in the war, preparations would be made by the Prussian military to ensure a strong rapid reaction force would be ready should the need arise to honor treaty obligations.

Classified:

The Prussian Navy has returned home following their Atlantic patrols. With the situation around Great Britain having the potential to impact the continent it was deemed no longer beneficial to have military vessels patrolling commercial shipping lanes. The navy will remain at heightened readiness with the majority of sailors confined to their ships while at port. Extra supplies will be readied to allow a quick turnaround time should the need arise.

In continuing Prussian preparation for conflict, additional safety measures will be deployed at major commercial entry points into Prussia, including air and land routes. These will include security personnel, anti-air measures (where needed, also anti-shipping), as well as increased surveillance services. Quick reactions forces have finished their readiness and are prepared to deploy should the need arise. The Prussian government will continue to urge diplomatic talks in Munich between the United Kingdom and Danish governments.

Prussia to Resign Security Council Seat

BERLIN - At the end of this year's United Nations session Prussia will resign its security council seat in favor of new European representation. Prussia has held onto Western/Central Europe's seat for over a decade, enjoying the support of her neighbors for the majority of this time. In recent years the organization has been met with continual grid-lock on decisions and has allowed several major wars and disputes to remain unsettled and unanswered. Despite this, public sentiment largely remained supportive of Prussian participation. The dispute in South Africa became a turning point following lack of U.N. intervention. As a result, Chancellor Müller ultimately was forced to admit his government would "evaluate" Prussia's continued membership in the international organization. Ultimately, it was determined that, with a fresh conflict in Europe (Denmark's attack on the United Kingdom), and a lack of activity among the general assembly, further investment by Prussia into the rigorous needs (and costs) of Security Council participation was no longer a worthwhile investment. Prussia's long-term ambassador to the U.N. will remain at his post until the end of the session before transitioning to an unnamed position with the Foreign Ministry.

Government Reaffirms Nordic Socialism Ban

HAMBURG- Chancellor Müller's government has reaffirmed the ban on all forms of Nordic Socialism in Prussia. This announcement follows the unification of Austria and Hungary under a neo-fascist regime closely resembling the structure of Greater Germany - including its own name. The formation of Austria-Hungary closely follows the rise, and immediate fall, of a democratic Czech Republic.

In speaking outside Hamburg's Technical University, Chancellor Müller said, "Prussians must once more stand up and remind the world that we are a people rooted in democratic tradition, of liberty and equality - with the belief that diplomacy, trade and cooperation mean more than a might is right mentality. Nordic Socialism is a disgusting vehicle that allowed millions of innocents to be under the oppressive boot-heel of a fascist government for decades. Let it be known the Prussia rejects, in all forms and incarnations, this ugly ideology. There will never be another Nordic Socialist party, government or organization legally allowed to set foot on Prussian soil - this, is the promise of the Prussian people, and our hope for a brighter future for Europe, and the world."

In addition the Bundeswehr will increase personnel assigned to guarding the nation's borders. Increased troops will be moved to rapid reaction stations across the nation to prepare for future conflicts. As the Danish-English war continues, the troops readied in preparation for that conflict will be joined by these new rapid reaction soldiers, sailors and airmen. Increased usage of unmanned aerial vehicles will assist ground based systems for monitoring the nation's borders, as well as assist in future conflicts.

 Economy Slows

FRANKFURT - The Prussian economy has missed economist's expectations for the quarter following higher than expected costs associated with reunification of the southern territories. Infrastructure, particularly bridges and highways, has cost the government several billion Marks to modernize and bring up to federally mandated requirements. This, combined with several recent floods in the east has impacted the nation's economy in a negative fashion.

Berlin has urged caution with the Chancellor being quoted as saying, "the economy remains extremely strong despite the quarters setback. The auto industry has shown particularly strong results in recent months, even as the airline industry has lagged behind expectations..."

Opposition in parliament has criticized the government for not tapping into the nation's North Sea oil fund to finance the unification. The government has thus far resisted (mounting) pressure to use the proceeds from oil production to help the nation's balance sheet, explaining the need to preserve the fund following several fluctuations in the oil market in recent months. A harsh winter may force the government to change its position if consumer spending is slowed, especially going into the Christmas season where retailers typically experiencing their most business of the year.

Lufthansa Pilots Strike

COLOGNE- For the third time in as many months the pilots union for Lufthansa has called a strike over pay and benefits. The pilot's union, Vereinigung Cockpit, is pushing for pilots to retain a 60% pension with early retirement at age 55. Lufthansa contends that new pilots should not be given the ability to retain that large of a pension at such an early age, but has stated that current pilots will remain able to retire at age 55 with the current 60% pension. The company, who earlier this month announced another fall in profits over complications from union strikes, has offered to go to a government mediator if the union agrees to negotiate in good faith. Lufthansa's traditional giant status in the Prussian commercial airline industry has come under strain in recent years as low-cost carriers begin to lure customers away with prices as low as 80 Marks for round trip fares from Cologne to Breslau. This is the tenth strike Lufthansa has faced this year compared to their closest competitors one. Sources have indicated that for the time being the CEO's job is safe, but share holder pressure may force a change if the stock continues its steep decline on the Frankfurt market.

British Government Collapses... Again

LONDON, ENGLAND, UNITED KINGDOM - Instability has returned to Europe with the collapse of yet another British government. These past decades has seen the rise and fall of many governments in the British Isles. With yet another collapse of governing authority the question must be asked: Is Britain Worth Europe's Time and Money? The costs that burden the tax payers in the Athenian Federation, who now will no doubt seek to envelope the islands in a protectorate, due to additional military and diplomatic costs must be astounding. Prussia alone has spent countless man hours and millions in Marks to fund diplomatic expeditions, conferences, and interactions with and for the British people. No doubt, members of the Bundestag will demand a full explanation of how the Chancellor allowed the nation's finances to be continually drained into the black hole that is the British Isles.

Chancellor to Step Down After Term Ends

BERLIN- Chancellor Müller will not seek a third term in office he announced today in a press briefing. This comes as a shock to many, including those close to him, as his reelection gave the SPD a larger majority and a mandate for progressive actions. His third term has been relatively quiet with the economy taking much of his time and energy domestically, and terrorist incidents in the Athenian Federation internationally. A small slip of the economy several quarters ago gave his opponents the chance to harangue his refusal to take from the nation's savings. Yet, this proved a wise decision as mere days later worldwide oil prices began to fall consistently for the first time in almost a decade. With his opponents in the CDU scrambling to reorganize internally, and policy successes stacking, it is not quite known why the Mr. Müller will not continue in office.

A relatively young politician, Mr. Müller is nearing fifty-four and has not had any serious health concerns. Minister for Foreign Affairs, Klaus Spreckles is is the rumored heir apparent, though differences between the Chancellor and his Minister may force the party to go with a relatively unknown candidate. One such candidate is the mayor of Breslau, Katarina Wiśniewski, who has had considerable success turning around a once outdated industrial city into a thriving center of innovation and technological expertise, especially in the nation's aerospace and arms industries. Mrs. Wiśniewski, a former engineer turned politician, has little international experience beyond that found in private industry which may prevent her from becoming too serious a candidate. With almost two years remaining in the Mr. Müller's term, there will be plenty of time for all major parties to find a candidate to present to the nation.

Federal Police Raid Hate Groups

DRESDEN- Special anti-terror units of the Prussian Federal Police launched simultaneous raids in the early morning hours across Dresden. Specifically, the raids targeted groups linked to the promotion of Nordic-Socialism, which has seen a small resurgence in popularity which experts are linking to the actions of the government of Austria. The government has confirmed thirty-five Prussians and thirteen foreign persons were arrested during the raids. The mayor of Dresden, Martin Roth, praised the actions of the police saying, “It is imperative that hate-groups understand the difference between free speech and activities that breach the law. There will be no tolerance for those that breach the law and seek to harm innocent persons.”

CDU Popularity On the Rise

BERLIN- In what should send shock waves through the ruling party, a new poll suggests the CDU is viewed more favorably ahead of election season. While it is still early to speculate on the political climate with another year and a half to go before elections there does seem to be a lack of a front-runner for the SPD whereas the CDU seems to be coalescing around four-five candidates.  The nation's economy has done surprising well the past few months which is usually a boon to the ruling party, so what seems to be shifting favor to the opposition? Professor van Schultzfeld explains, "A popular Chancellor is stepping down, and there is not a deputy that seems to have much charisma ready to take over. Coupled with a lack of international events which could raise national pride, conflicts abroad, and the media has shifted into a cycle of crime and sensationalism which portrays the nation in a state of distress." If the SPD expects to win the next election, it had better find a charismatic figure able to promote the economic accomplishments of the last six years or faces another time in opposition.

Bundestag to Debate Drug Policy

BERLIN- The Bundestag will debate the nation’s drug policy following an upheaval in public opinion over marijuana use. This comes as the nation gears up for election season, and some think it is a move by the chancellor to shield his party from a potential weakness on the campaign trail. While it is possible that the Bundestag could pass progressive drug policies, it would have to do so with the support of all SPD members, and a majority of the Greens which is unlikely. The CDU, especially their more conservative members in Bavaria, will object to any measure that seeks to decriminalize current banned substances. Some major cities under SPD control have passed new policies aimed at easing drug related offense for so-called “soft” drugs such as marijuana.

Government to Expand Armed Forces

Berlin - The government has announced plans to recruit an additional 50,000 active duty personnel and nearly 100,000 new reserve personnel in the first major recruitment effort in over a decade. Defense spokesman Jens Uwe, speaking in front of the Bundestag, said the recruitment drive is part of the armed forces modernization efforts. Such efforts have already yielded tangible results for the Navy, which is currently testing two new combat ships. The Air Force, meanwhile, is currently working with allied partners on continual integration and testing of its new aircraft which began in the aftermath of the Polish war of aggression. As part of the modernization effort, currently bases are undergoing an extensive review period to determine if upgrades are needed. In some cases, it is expected that recommendations will be made to phase out existing sites in favor of newly built facilities.

NUREMBERG- Military exercises will begin in Bavaria next month. This will be the first major exercise following the collapse of the Athenian Federation. Only Russia and Prussia continue to function as beacons of stability in Europe. With the risk of violence stemming from this lawlessness, the exercises will focus on rapid response scenarios from natural disasters, cyber attacks and full blown invasion of a friendly state. In addition to these exercises defense companies will be on hand to showcase their new systems for military decision-makers. Virtus International will be the favorite to develop a new anti-missile platform, but there are rumors the system has encountered several delays during the most recent trials.
