Population Report of the Amazon Confederacy

The Amazon Confederacy's population is current 823,000 persons, give or take a few hundred. The problems associated with getting a clear report include isolation of population, lack of land access to villages and roaming tribal groups, and reluctance of Canton level government officials to participate in a federally mandated research project. None the less, despite these difficulties and with the help of helicopters and volunteers the information has been gathered and the results have proven to be quite enlightening.

Ethnographically speaking, the Holy American Empire proved to be the worst possible event ever in the lives of the Amazonian tribal groups. The spread of disease, warfare, and the wholesale destruction of the environment prompted the worst ever die off of Amazonian Tribal groups in recorded history. The first post-fall settlers in the region integrated the surviving tribal members into their groups and this lead to the more or less extinction of the Amazon tribes with in the region of the Amazon Confederacy.

The passing of time has brought about some interesting results. In the modern day Amazon Confederacy the traditions of the Amazon Tribes are well and alive due to a dedicated study group at the Amazon University, which has spent millions of dollars and countless hours cataloging Amazon Tribal languages, artifacts, and customs. The research has prompted the reforming of several family sized tribal groups that have been given licenses by the Amazon Confederacy to exist as formal semi-autonomous units within the borders of the Confederacy. These licenses ensure political freedom but at the same time give these family sized units access to modern medical care and educational support. Further, a dedicated group of officers in the Amazon Confederacy National Police exists to support these groups and their specific problems.

23 Cantons System

The 23 Cantons is a reference to the Swiss system of governance in which the Cantons serve as states of sort. The Confederacy's national government serves at the whim of the 23 Cantons. A Canton wide vote of 2/3rds of the Canton leaders can dissolve the Federal Government at any time. The Canton Council is required to vote on a yearly budget and refusal to do so means Federal government's work is immediately halted until a budget can be set. These limits seem highly restrictive in a modern government, but the restrictions are in place to prevent abuse of government power and uncontrolled borrowing for government programs.

The Federal Government has a permanent mandate for the following:

The Amazon Confederacy Freeway system- The Federal Government is required to keep this operating smoothly and in good repair.

The Amazon Confederacy Communications and Mail- The Federal Government is required to keep phones, internet, and mail services operating smoothly. Given the distributed nature of the population the requires for a modern telecommunications system are vastly different than those of other nations.

The Amazon Confederacy Defense Force- The Federal Government will keep a standing army of 30,000 men and women trained and ready to take the field at all times.

Numerous other powers are given to the Amazon Confederacy Federal government on a temporary basis that are voted upon every year with the passing of the budget.
