Newfoundland's news table

With the sudden failures of major financial institutions in the Commonwealth, as well as the subsequent losses, economist have expressed concern that the hit may affect our own markets in the near future. These concerns are not without merit, as after the events of New York that led to their stocks falling nearly 20% across the board, cases of panic selling were reported. So far, major industries and companies have reported small loses so far, but have been warned that that may not be the case for long.

Economist also warn that, because of Newfoundland&Labrador's small and somewhat limited markets, that a small recession, should the market fail to revive quickly enough or if the government fails to find a solution, that the on coming recession could easily become more severe.

Once again, Newfoundland&Labrador finds another of its friends, this time Faraway, has fallen. As saddened as we are to hear this, we are glade that the Commonwealth has taken much of what was once Faraway to help and govern the people there.

In other news, stocks of major companies has remained the same mostly for the past couple of days, refusing to rise more than a few cents, but thankfully also refusing to fall too much further. It is currently unknown how current global politics will affect stock prices.

"The Amazon Republic would be very much interested in investing in North America. Perhaps our two nations to come to some sort of agreement?"

The Newfoundland space program, NLCSER, has announced plans of a new mission, to send a person into low earth orbit sometime next week, where he will orbit for three days before returning to earth. This mission will begin within the week, to finish preparations and safety checks. The agency has also announced plans to create additional  satellites for space exploration.

In other news, thanks to increased demand of oil, and other resources, the economy has managed to avoid a major recession. As our economist are glad to hear this news, they warn that this may not be the case for long.

Winter Storm Warning in effect

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the island of Newfoundland. Over the next 48 hours, heavy rain and snow is to come about the island. Snowfall in western, northern and central Newfoundland is expected to reach around 40 cm. Some parts may end up with 70 or more cm. of snow. The western and southern sections of the Notre Dame Bay area are expected to have winds reaching 100 km/hr tonight.

The FES-NL would like to encourage residents and visitors to notice these conditions, and avoid coastal areas if possible.

Because of the weather, flight delays are likely throughout the island.

Until this Winter Storm Warning is no longer in effect, we encourage visitors and tourist to seek shelter, and the public is advised to watch for future warnings and weather forecast on our site.

After getting no objection from the American government, he Texas Secretary of State would send out word to Newfoundland stating that the Texas Air National Guard had a C-130 in Maine that could drop off any emergency supplies needed in any area of the island for the next 48 hours. The crew and captain of the aircraft would be willing to make multiple trips until the weather cleared up if needed.

The C-130 of the Texas National Guard would be given a green light directly from the Governor's office to distribute humanitarian aid to New Foundland for 24 hours and then would need to return home because of emergency situations in Texas.

Governor Lawrence was happily amused that Texas was refereed to as a nation.

Election results for the 14th session for the House of representatives of Newfoundland&Labrador are in.

Newfoundland&Labrador Socialist Party: 80 seats

Newfoundland&Labrador First Party: 80

New States Party: 20

Labrador Party: 15

Greens party: 3

Independents: 2

A result of the NLF Party to remain isolated, and the NLS Party wishing to stop the country's current policy of semi-isolation, the two parties have the population split on how Newfoundland&Labrador should handle foreign policy. The Labrador Party also appears to be growing, as the economic conditions in the region has stayed mostly the same Newfoundland admitted Labrador into the country.

With the two largest parties split in the house, it is likely that even less may get done, if that is possible.

Economy in Labrador shows signs of Growth-

Good Times for both Newfoundland, and Labrador

Since the 'Labrador Mining Project', which was created and signed around six years ago, the region of Labrador has finally shown strong economic growth in the mining and resource extraction industries. With a unemployment of only 1.8% in Labrador, the resource extraction industries have not only helped the mainland, but also Newfoundland as well, by providing Newfoundland&Labrador factories with more raw material to use. This growth is expected to strengthen Newfoundland&Labrador's economy.

Towns in Western Labrador needs more power

Various towns in western Labrador say that they need more electricity, and are calling for the governor of Labrador to build new power lines from Churchill Falls, where the hydroelectric power station that serves a part of the region is.

Various municipal leaders got together earlier to talk about this issue. One of the leaders, Karen of Labrador City, stated that "If the lines aren't built and replaced soon, that the various mining projects will have to shut down. And should the projects have to shut-down, then that will put thousands out of work, and cost hundreds of millions in lost production, and the loss of various projects."

Labrador's minister of resources, Derrick Rode, stated that he understands the concerns of these towns of western Labrador, but wishes to consider all possible options before building any new power lines. The governor of Labrador, Yvonne McGrath, has also stated that she is looking into the matter.

The Newfoundland New's Comet, showing you what's going on since a while.

The Labrador Issue

220px-Labrador_fullmap.gif

With the recent succession and re-annexation of Labrador, the governments of of both Newfoundland and Labrador are looking in at what happened to cause such a quick collapse of the transitional government, and why the people have decided to secede to begin with. A quick look at some of the more recent events within the past month or so may at least explain some things.

About six and a half months ago several towns in western Labrador, including the capital of Labrador, Labrador City, requested additional funds to be provided by the provincial government  for the purpose of building new power lines, and expand the power capabilities of the Churchill Falls Generating Station. Because of how much of the regional and local economy depends on the station, and how much the project would cost, the provincial government sent the request to the national government at St. John, Newfoundland. At this point, two months would have already passed, by which time the issue was sent to the national government of the Republics of Newfoundland&Labrador. As the government at st. john was debating the issue, along with several others, and some gridlock that is believed to have affected it, another problem would soon came up, several large storms, along with a harsh Christmas storm, would once again, slow down Newfoundland&Labrador's economy, and end up costing over 9.5 million NFD in property and infrastructure damage. As the government was working on how to pay for the damages, the towns in Labrador started to suffer because of a now slow growing economy because the funds for their requested grant hasn't came about yet.

A month later, Yvonne McGrath's (2nd) term as governor of Labrador was up, with John O'Leary of the still young Labrador Communist Party, which was mostly created because they felt that the Labrador party wasn't doing enough to help the region and because some of them felt that a more government controlled economy would help benefit the region, would be elected by a 65% vote, for his promise that he will do something about the economy, and will do all in his power to fix it.  A few weeks later, and he would send to the polls a succession request, which by this point, the government at St. John knew about, but it being already too late to fix their issues, let it go to vote to see if Labrador would secede . By a majority vote of 80%, they choose so, with John O'Leary as head of state. A couple of days later, and the request was sent to the government at St. John, who decided that they had to allow it.

Over the next couple of weeks, John O'Leary would allow a grant of 75 million NFD to build more power lines, and upgrade the Churchill Falls Generating Station, which has helped the economy. However, as they didn't have the money, they had to borrow it from various banks from both Newfoundland and Labrador. A month after his reign however, another large storm decided to hit the region, and as John O'Leary was driving somewhere, his car slid on ice, and went into little wabush lake, were his automobile would later be found. With the assumption that he died, there was no one to lead the country, and the region soon fell into anarchy.

After reports of looting and some pirate activity in the Labrador sea, and some of the towns, [url=http://forums.cybernations.net/index.php?/topic/119893-the-press-of-republic-of-labrador/?p=3212753 a Polish unit "happened" to be in the area,[/url]and has assisted with some looting in Cartwright, and the Commonwealth is believed to of helped with the situation as well. After a few of days of restoring order to the region, the region was once again under control of the government at St. John.

A month later, and the region has voted in Carney Vianelli, who was previously Labrador's MoFA, as Labrador's new governor. Two months after that, and Labrador voted to be a part of Newfoundland again, with the condition that their economy will get more support and attention from Newfoundland.

After nearly a year sine Labrador was re-annexed into Newfoundland, the governments of the two regions decided that our nation should have a new name to reflect both our heritage, and culture. After a weeks of debate of what our nation should be renamed to, it was finally voted, with 183 of 200 votes, that our nation's name shall be changed to "Républiques de Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador", which translates (from French) to "Republic of Newfoundland and Labrador:.

The name was brought up by someone from the Newfoundland and Labrador First Party, and the name was put to the vote a couple days ago. As our nation has a French history, and some of their culture, the government figured that they should have a name to reflect that.

Elections in the republic will begin next week for the fifth presidential election, for our third president. Even though our latest president, Françoise Rode, has only done a part of what he said he would do, it is still believed that the socialist party will win the next race.

Three months after the presidential elections, and the elections for those wishing for a seat in the senate will come. With the gridlock over some domestic and foreign policy issues, it is expected that the New States Party and some independents will gain more seats during the next couple of elections, with the Newfoundland&Labrador Socialist Party, and the Newfoundland&Labrador First Party expected to lose some more of their seats. The Labrador party is expected to stay about the same, as most of their support comes from those living in the region of Labrador.

With the elections over the past couple of weeks now over, the third president of Newfoundland&Labrador is Robert Mason! With a 65% of the popular vote, Robert Mason will become our new president starting next month, when he plans to speak to the people to thank them for electing him. We at the Newfoundland News Table wish our newest president the best of luck in running our fine republic.

Also in the news, two months from now will be the 16th election for the 16th session for the House of representatives of Newfoundland&Labrador.

Election results for the 16th session for the House of representatives for our republic are in;

Newfoundland&Labrador Socialist Party: 78 seats

Newfoundland&Labrador First Party: 73

New States Party: 30

Labrador Party: 16

Greens party: 5

Independents: 15

With what little that has happened in the house, it was expected that the smaller parties are to gain more seats. Most of the gridlock appears to be from a shifting of ideologies in the "Newfoundland&Labrador Socialist Party", and the "Newfoundland&Labrador First Party", with the later wanting to be more isolationist, and the former wanting to be less so. Some other problems are taxes, and a disagreement on some of the laws and acts that some want passed.
