Adjustment to Our Policy on Spam

The staff will be relaxing the prohibitions on spam effective immediately. From here on out, the staff will no longer issue warns for one word posts expressing general approval to an announcement (e.g "Hail", "yay", "congrats" ect). Players should note that posts containing only emoticons or 'o/' will still be considered spam.

Revisions in Bold:

Spam

Spam is defined as creating posts or topics containing only contentless material of any kind. Users found spamming will receive a warning. Examples include (but are in no way limited to) posts containing nothing but smilies, "+1", "QFT", "this" any other one/few-word contentless combination, joke threads, or posts containing quotes and anything that counts as spam by itself. Adding words to a post with the express intent of avoiding a spam warn will result in a warning. These posts and other similar contributions have no substance and hence are considered spam. Posts of "Ave", "Hail" or any other one word congratulatory type are acceptable as one word posts. Emoticon type posts such as "o/" without accompanying text is still not allowed. Posts containing only images are considered spam, unless the image is being used in the Alliance Politics sub-forum and then the actual text of the image be placed into spoiler tags.

Could I make a suggestion that images with text be acceptable? Having to reiterate the text of a meme below the meme's image is pointless and detracts from the presentation.

Reaction images will require some text posted with them, regardless of if there is text in the image or not. While there are cases where exception might be warranted, in general reaction images are basically spam and don't contribute much to a discussion.

Using a reaction mime is lazy posting anyway.

I disagree. Using a simple meme or even a GIF to sum up your whole reaction to something is often times quite amusing. Though I can see how it could get out of hand.

What is the rationale behind specifically banning 'o/' but allowing 'Hail' when those are identical in meaning?

o/ is considered an emoticon, whereas 'Hail' and the like are a word of congratulations.

In some cases yes an image, even a reaction gif could be a meaningful stand alone contribution to a discussion. However there are at least as many other cases where it would be contentless and fall into spam territory. The choice is really between having a clear boundary or an ambiguous one, and we feel it's better for everyone (ourselves and you all) that the line is well defined. If we make it too murky well intentioned players may receive warns unpredictably as a consequence of confusion on the part of the acting mod or the forum poster.

Basically we're not really cut out to be artistic curators, and you probably don't want us wading into those waters.

Hello there strangely robotic version of me! You should consider loosening up a little more, maybe getting a change of oil? Me and you could always go and have Neo Uruk oil us up for the Main Event!

Except the rules specifically allow the one-word meaning of that emoticon. I don't see how specifically prohibiting the emoticon makes sense in that context. I can understand banning other emoticons, but not that one tbh.

If we allow one emoticon, people will demand we allow more such as o7 (just for starters). We allowed one worded congratulations and people want memes and o/. If you can't even be bothered to post the four letters for "hail" or a contracted "congrats" and absolutely have to post o/, frankly you have no business posting in the thread in the first place. That's just the way of things. Maybe in the future there will be a change to allow it, but for the time being we have decided to continue our ban on all emoticon-only posts rather than start a precedent for allowing it. As such it is easier for everyone to just keep things as they are, it hurts no one and isn't a some massive request of you the posters.

Glad to see this change. Though as other's posted, I would say o/ should be simply enough of a reply as well, but nonetheless I like to change. Many times I had to just add extra words, when a simple "congrats" was all that was needed
