Tales of a Traveler; I've got a copy from 1895 (this isn't special - first edition was in 1824 - I'm just saying it's old :P ). Most Americans have probably read small parts of it at some point. It's actually a collection of short-stories, but they tie together in some ways, and the heroes tend to be pretty relateable / teach great lessons about life.

My two favorite parts of the book are the story of Buckthorne (I guess the easiest summary is to call him the son of a wealthy man who grows up as a miscreant, going from one disappointment to another til he finally realizes his "great expectations"); and the story of the Italian Banditti. Many sub-stories are told throughout the entire book; one story leads into another story leads into another story. But one of the recurring characters in Banditti is a grumpy Englishman that the other characters (cultured Venetians) consider a brute. He's cold, rude, and unsociable; but in the end he saves the Venetians from a group of bandits.

Every character has a lot of well-developed layers, and every story covers a lot of different situations. As long as you understand the language (it isn't for everybody :v: ), you might think about your own life and people you know as you read.

Ender's game is probably my favorite book, i think its incredibly relatable and makes you question what the people surrounding you are actually trying to get you to do, even if you rebel, is that what they want?

Too many to list, and I can't choose just one. Most lists I could make will probably include (not all exactly "books"): The Lord of the Rings, 1984, The Forever War, the Odyssey, Ivanhoe, Macbeth, Guns Germs and Steel, It, Cryptonomicon, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Art of War... I'd better stop here or I'll spend hours on this. :)
