Seeking headset advice.

Probably a long shot, but I'm stick of my crappy logitech made for skype headset and I want to upgrade to something more appropriate to the things that I like to do (listen to music and play various computer games). I'm aiming for higher end sets. I'm also aiming for something that comes with it's own external sound card or DAC, because I don't trust the quality of whatever passes for a sound card in my laptop. Finally, I'd prefer closed back; while I would like to be able to hear things around me, I'd rather not have my music/gaming keeping people awake late at night.

My first preference was the Sennheiser PC 363D, but this is now going to be unavailable in Australia til the end of March.

I have been already warned away from the Astro A40s and A50s because they have poor quality for actually listening to music.

My current best guess is an Audio-Technica ATH-AG1, but it appears they have only been released in Australia at this time. In the off chance that anyone here has any experience with them, would they mind sharing their experiences with me? Cheers. :)

Why would you want to spend so much money on a headset? I found an offbrand that works just as well in Game stop and which works with multiple gaming systems and platforms for a mere 90.00. Not to mention I can go wireless with it and roam my house. Will have to get the brand and make for you when I get home. Audio quality is excellent. Once you have it, you can send me 90.00 of the 180.00 you were going to waste in donations as a finders fee.

Why not this one?

If that's really solid gold that would hurt the $%&@ out of my ear to wear. If it's not really solid gold it's not worth 80 dollars.

I'll wait for the name of your headphones Maelstrom.

It says there's 8 oz of gold in each headset, which is economically impossible since they're selling it for $90 and gold costs over $1200 an ounce.

So buy one, remove all of the gold, sell it on the market and build a new computer with dual 880s (when they come out later this year) and 4k screens. Love your work <3

Oh, those. They're only at EB games down here, and even then they're like $160-200 dollars (the site claims 160, you head into the store to pick it up and they want...). For that I could at least be going for the top end Logitech/Corsair stuff, or even the equivalent Audio Technica/Sennheisers without a microphone.

It's not an issue of exchange rates, the Australian dollar is reasonably comparable to the US dollar at the moment. It's an issue of shipping, higher wages and lower purchasing power. However in a lot of cases there's added markups simply because it's Australia and we seem to like to pay more.

Maybe. I'd certainly trust their keyboards and mice. But they aren't so hot for music and none of them come with DACs/external sound cards. Not only would I need to drop $200 into a sound card that will get the proper quality out of them, but I'd need to buy a whole new PC setup because I sure as hell couldn't put such a sound card into my laptop.
