Most Destructive War In CN History?

I was looking at the game stats and as noted here Cyber Nations recently surpassed the highest global radiation level ever recorded in the game. The previous record on GRL, attained during the Karma War, was 47.47. Today the GRL is sitting at 55.93 and will rise again after update tonight. From the CN information index:

Global radiation is a count of all nations in the game attacked with nuclear weapons in the past 30 days. Global radiation negatively affects everyone's nation environment in the game up to level 5.00. The bonus resource radiation cleanup reduces global radiation for your nation by 50%. The current formula for global radiation is: global radiation = (total nations hit by nukes * 300) / total nations...

I was wondering if this is really the most destructive war in CN history or if the smaller nation count in the game now, as compared to the nation count during the Karma war, has anything to do with the GRL reaching record highs. So I crunched the numbers and here's what I came up with:

Karma - 30,500 In-game nations, GRL 47.47 = 4,826 Nations nuked during a 30 day period

Current - 26,200 In-game nations, GRL 55.93 = 4,885 Nations nuked during a 30 day period

The current count of nuked nations within the past 30 days, at the time of this writing, is 4,994 nations nuked so we're well beyond the previous records in both total nations nuked for the past 30 days as well as the ratio of nuked nations to overall nation population.

This war also sets the record for the most days of peak activity that the game has ever seen. The Karma war had about 12 days of peak activity as noted in the bandwidth chart here:

The current war is sitting at 18 days of peak activity, with a slight dip in traffic when NpO and \m/ declared white peace, and then traffic shot back up when everyone else got involved:

SecondUJWar.jpg

The red lines in the charts above indicate the 95th percentile, which is something that data centers use for billing, and it's interesting to note that the Karma war had a higher 95th percentile than the current war. This is due in part because of the fewer in-game nations currently at play in the game (about 15% fewer) as compared to during the Karma war.

So is this the biggest, most destructive war in CN history? That is debatable as well as yet to be fully determined since the war isn't even over yet. We certainly have more nations nuked this time around, and this war has lasted longer, as far as peak traffic goes, than any other war before it - and it's still raging on. I have seen others name this war "The Great Reset" and anytime you see titles like that offered up you know it's big.

I appreciate everyone's patience during update time when the site gets flooded with traffic. I've been at this for 4 years now and I've done everything in my power to ease the load during update time but when you're dealing with a major war like this there's only so much traffic that the host and the game server can handle. I have been up every night since this whole thing started, until the wee hours of the morning, monitoring the server and making sure that everything is running as smoothly as possible. I haven't seen too many complaints about the update time slow down this time around so I'm guessing everyone understands that by now. If there is frustration out there it appears that it is being taken out on your war partners in the form of nukes rather than griping to me about it. :awesome:

Nice graphs, admin.

I don't think this is the biggest war or even the most destructive. It is, however, only the second war where everyone has gone weapons free. Even as far back as War of the Coalition, many alliances refrained from using nukes. During Karma, most, if not all alliances went nuclear, and the same was true for this war.

I think that another part of it is the size of the alliances involved in this war. TOP, GRE, MK, Umbrella, and NpO, all have extremely high nuke counts and are also not afraid to use them. They have big nations with big nukes and lenient nuclear policies. More nuclear nations being involved means more nukes and higher GRL. The fact that huge nations are actually involved in fighting means that some of the most destructive nukes in history are being thrown.

But overall, i don't think the damage or participation in this war is quite at the level of GWII or GWIII. Even the lag hasn't really measured up. During GWIII, I was locked out for an hour at one point.

You make a good point, and unfortunately I don't have traffic graphs going that far back. I do remember though, during GWIII, the hour+ lockout. I should also note that for the past couple of nights I've seen traffic decrease significantly with the peak traffic lockout lasting only about 15-20 minutes after update now.

Going by the responses, I'd say "most destructive" depends on what you mean by destructive. As Noob Cake said, the dollar-value of damage is likely the highest it's ever been.

On the other hand, having read the Wiki on Great War III, it seems that back then, all but the most staunch neutrals were involved in that war, so the percentage of overall NS destroyed may easily have been higher.

Everyone being in anarchy stops a lot of new wars from being declared; therefore there's not a whole lot of people crashing the servers at update trying to declare and get a quad attack in.

Gimme 25 nukes and I'll have a ball with them. :awesome:

are we talking most destructive in terms of raw numbers, or most destructive in terms of damage done versus total nation size?

A lot more nukes are falling this war because 1) it's weapons free and 2) a lot more nations have nukes now. Not only are nations on average bigger than they were before, but there have been twelve more months for people to buy Manhattan Projects. While there are still people joining the game every day, the average nation size is still creeping up, and the path to nukes is easier than it has been before.

If I recall correctly, you and the Moderation team made a few changes after the last few big wars to better handle the stress load as well. Or am I incorrect in that assessment?

I admit, I was on vacation when Karma hit.

Might be the folks that were not staggered hitting hippy to reload, give it 3 or 4 days and there should be a pick up again lol.

edit: also what are the other colors on the graphs?

The war has been on for almost two weeks now. Nations that can are going to peace mode, which means that they don't hit updates. Also, many people are giving up hitting back and have started turtling, another activity that doesn't demand a presence at update.

The changes that you made to the forum and game functionalities around update also did a lot to cut down the lag. Also, didn't you purchase a new server sometime between GWIII and Karma?

a thought, admin -- divs use less bandwidth then tables. I don't know how much redesigning it would take, as I don't know your coding style, but it wouldn't be more than 10 minutes to switch from tables to a div and css based layout.
